Anyone catch this documentary last night? Mesmerizing and great tv.

Haven't seen the documentary, but according to Wikipedia:

He then admits he knew well before the fight that not only had the gloves been tampered with but that his hands were encased in plaster of paris.

From the Resto entry:

However, Collins' father and trainer, Billy, Sr., discovered that Resto's gloves were thinner than normal. When Billy, Sr. reached out to shake Resto's hand, he felt only leather over fist. Screaming that he thought the gloves had no padding, Collins, Sr. demanded that the New York State Boxing Commission impound the gloves. An investigation revealed that someone had removed an ounce of padding from each of his gloves. However, it was obvious even before then that the gloves had been altered. Collins' eyes were swollen shut by the end of the 10th round, and the rest of his face was so badly swollen that it was impossible to believe a light puncher could have inflicted such damage.[1]

And Resto & his trainer were also apparently guilty of manslaughter:

During the fight Collins had suffered a torn iris and permanently blurred vision, which prevented him from boxing again. After losing two jobs in a short time after the fight, he began smoking mar1juana and drinking heavily. His violent mood swings threatened his marriage. Finally, on March 6, 1984, he crashed his car into a culvert near his home in Antioch, Tennessee; a suburb of Nashville. He was killed on impact. Many commentators, as well as Collins' family, believe that the loss of his livelihood broke him psychologically.

He was charged with assault and sent to prison for 2 and a half years.
