UH’s Holgorsen hired away
Okla. St. lands key component of Coogs’ offense

College football’s top-ranked offensive machine will get a tune-up whether it needs one or not.
Dana Holgorsen, who assembled the Houston Cougars’ system that produced the most points (42.1) and yards per game (563.4) in the nation this past season, accepted a job Friday as offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State.
With head coach Kevin Sumlin having entrusted Holgorsen with the offense the past two seasons, the Cougars generated 41.4 points and 563.1 yards per game. UH quarterback Case Keenum finished eighth in the 2009 Heisman Trophy voting and became the second player in NCAA history to have multiple 5,000-yard passing seasons.
Holgorsen, 38, was an assistant at Texas Tech from 2000-07 and is a disciple of spread-offense devotee Mike Leach.
“We’re elated that Dana is joining our staff,” OSU coach Mike Gundy said in a statement released through the school on Friday night. “He has a great pedigree and a history of success. We’re excited about what he brings the OSU football program.”
The departure of Holgorsen leaves Sumlin with two key positions to fill. Sumlin last week dismissed defensive coordinator John Skladany, who on Thursday caught on as a linebackers/special teams coach at UCF. Among the candidates in the mix to replace Skladany are former Marshall coach Mark Snyder, former Texas Tech defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeill and Pittsburgh Steelers defensive backs coach Ray Horton.
Sumlin will have another opening if, as expected, Gundy makes room on his staff for former Texas Tech quarterback Kliff Kingsbury, who has spent the past two seasons as the UH offensive quality control assistant. Kingsbury had enough influence to have been an invited guest of Keenum at the Davey O’Brien Award ceremony in Orlando, Fla.
“You always have a plan for what happens next,” Sumlin said. “You’d better, particularly if you’re winning.”
One of Holgorsen’s signature games at UH was his masterful plan and play-calling for a 45-35 victory at No. 5 OSU on Sept. 12 in Stillwater. The Cougars passed for 366 yards and ran for 146, keeping the OSU defense off balance throughout the game.
One game later, Holgorsen's helped orchestrate a 29-28 victory against Leach's Texas Tech Raiders in front of the largest crowd (32,114) to attend a UH game at Robertson Stadium. UH built records of 8-1 and 10-2 and climbed to as high as No. 12 in the national rankings before losing its final two games.
“I spoke with Dana (Friday) morning and I’ve spoken with him about many opportunities that are just like this one,” Sumlin said. “He deserves all the accolades and he deserves all the opportunities that have come up for him — not just this one, but there have been many others. It told him he has done a great job here. We’d love to keep him here, but I also understand if that’s what he feels like he needs to do.”

I don't know anything about Holgorsen, other than he seemed to have done a pretty good job at Houston. Why do you think he was an idiot?
