I recently was obtaining information about the WTC, (i.e. it's history, structure, FAQs, etc.) and read that at it observation post you could see at least 45+ miles in any direction. Some have speculated that on a clear day it could have reached 70 miles... I thought this was interesting and wanted to find other neat facts about other building/structures to share with everyone. Here they are: When completed in 2009, the enormous Three Gorges Dam in China will actually be visible from the moon! The Empire State Building is struck by lightning on average 100 times per year. The U.S. Capitol's famous dome looks to be constructed of stone, but every bit of the capitol dome is made of cast iron. The Golden gate bridge is one of the longest and most beautiful bridges in the world, however, it was also strongly considered to be painted yellow and black instead of red!...also the length of steel wires used in the cables could circle the Earth 3 times! Talk about painting, the Eiffel Tower needs to be repainted with 50 tons of brown paint every 7 years! If you find some of these facts interesting as I have, visit www.pbs.org/wgbh/buildingbig/wonder/structure/browse.html for neat learning stuff.
I believe from the top of the Sears Tower on a clear day, you can see 4 different states: Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Michigan.
apparently the eiffel tower was the tallest building in the world until 1930 when the chrysler building came along. it's height also changes by +/- 15 cm (6 in. to the cool part of the world) depending on the temperature.
