Michael Schumacher to make sensational Formula One return with Ferrari
Michael Schumacher, the seven-time world Formula One champion, is set to make a sensational return to the sport as a replacement for the injured Felipe Massa.

Schumacher, who won five of those titles with Ferrari, will stand in for the Brazilian at the European Grand Prix in Valencia on August 23 and will drive Massa's car until he is fit to return.

"Though it is true that the Formula One chapter has long been closed for me, it is also true that for team loyalty reasons I cannot ignore that unfortunate situation," Schumacher said. “But as the competitor I am, I also very much look forward to facing this challenge.”

He added: “The most important thing first: thank God, all news concerning Felipe is positive, and I wish him all the best again.

“This afternoon I met with [team principal] Stefano Domenicali and [president] Luca di Montezemolo and together we decided that I will prepare myself to take the place of Felipe."

The 40-year-old remains an advisor to Ferrari following his retirement in 2006, however Bernie Ecclestone, the F1 chief, said earlier that he did not think the German is in good enough physical shape to make a return.

"I doubt whether he will," he said. "That guy, you must remember, was super-fit when he was driving, and to get as fit as that again and be prepared to get back in a car without any testing would be asking too much."

Schumacher damaged his back and his shoulder after a motorbike accident in February but it is unclear to what extent that would limit his ability to drive a Formula One car.

"Ferrari intends to entrust Michael Schumacher with Felipe Massa's car for as long as the Brazilian driver is not able to race," a statement from the Italian team said.

"Michael Schumacher has shown his willingness and in the next few days he will undergo a specific programme of preparation at the end of which it will be possible to confirm his participation in the championship."

Schumacher’s announcement comes a day after manager Willi Weber had categorically denied his client would step in for Massa due to the pressure that would be placed on him.

“Whoever sits in the car at the next race in Valencia, it will not be Michael Schumacher,” Weber had insisted. “I am not 100 per cent sure; I am 200 per cent sure. The pressure on him would be huge. He would be expected to win, but he has not driven this car.

"When Michael was racing he would get as close to perfection as possible. In this case, it would not be perfection, it would be a gamble - and that’s not Michael’s style.”

Meanwhile, Massa is said to be making good progress after surgery on a fractured skull following his horrific high speed crash in qualifying for last weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix.

He's a champion.
Maybe he'll be enticed into full time F1 racing again once he straps into Felipe's car. That would be great. This guy is an incredible driver to say the least

this will be interesting to see how he does with that car. The Ferrari car has been improving lately after a horrible start.

He'll get the job done but the Ferrari just isn't quick enough to win in its own right at the moment.
