I got some junk mail from ColumbiaHouse spouting a "5 dvd's for $49 (plus shipping)!!". The catch is to buy 3 more (I think) over the next 2 years at the regular price. Is it worth the hassle later down the road?
I think so. I've joined twice, bought my 3 at regular price within a couple weeks and cancelled. All together the entire package of DVD's comes out to between $8-10. If you refer someone that signs up you get 2 DVD's free. Can I refer you?? Send an email to tattooedgroove@yahoo.com.
i was actually gonna do the same thing...lookin at that today. what 5 movies are you goin for...here's my short list: Shawshank Redemption Gone in 60 Seconds A Beautiful Mind Forrest Gump Pay it Forward Dumb and Dumber i haven't seen A Beautiful Mind or Pay it Forward, but have heard they're good...the others i've see once each, and would love to watch again and again.
Don't join a DVD club like CH until you've gone to the DVD clubs forum on www.dvdtalk.com and checked the most recent signup codes. They usually have codes that you can use to sign up online that are much better than the standard offers. Don't forget that the standard deals usually charge a ton for shipping. A few months ago they had codes for 5 DVD's for $25, free shipping, no extra titles to buy later. I closed the account after getting the 5 DVD's and opened a couple more.
I've joined Columbia House before. I felt like I got good deals on average per order. They always had some special running where if you bought one DVD at club prices (which are high), you could get several at half price or some other large percentage off. Figuring out the average cost per disc per order, I picked DVDs that gave me better deals than I could get elsewhere and ordered that way. If I included the initial shipment in the average, I would think I would've done quite well overall on the membership. My only problem with them was that I'd decline a "Director's Selection" only to have it sent to me anyway. After calling, I was told that their website didn't always properly report when people declined the "Director's Selection". My understanding is, though, that they don't necessarily have automatic shipments of the "Director's Selections" anymore.
