    [espn] Kobe torn ligament

ESPN just reported it during the NC State game. Torn ligament in his finger. Edit: Just saw it again. ESPN said he could be out six weeks but I've also come across this:

Kobe Bryant has torn ligament in finger

    Kobe Bryant - G - LAK - Feb. 14 - 8:45 pm et
The Lakers revealed on Thursday that Kobe Bryant has a torn ligament in his right pinkie, but has decided against surgery that would sideline him for six weeks.

"My current thinking is to give my finger some treatment and rest for a few days," Bryant said in a statement. "I would prefer to delay any surgical procedure until after our Lakers season, and this summer's Olympic Games.

But, this is an injury that myself and the Lakers' medical staff will just have to continue to monitor on a day-to-day basis." His finger has a complete tear of the radial collateral ligament and an avulsion fracture, meaning that a small fragment of bone had been pulled off by a tendon. He might still play in the All-Star game, but has been ruled out of the 3-point contest, replaced by Dirk Nowitzki.

I don't think it's so bad. They have Odom and Gasol still. That's still 2 star players.

Heard he's going to try to play through it and not go for the surgery.

Either way, this could hurt the Lakers a bit. Luckily for him he has Gasol to depend on now.

This sounds like karma from the Basketball gods for getting Gasol for nothing ;)

The Los Angeles Lakers received some bad news as Kobe Bryant was diagnose with a complete tear of the radial collateral ligament and a volar plate injury at the MCP joint of the small finger of his right hand.

Dr. Steven Shin, a hand specialist with the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic group in California recommended surgery which would keep the defending NBA scoring champion out of the Lakers lineup for up to six weeks.

"My current thinking is to give my finger some treatment and rest for a few days, and hope I can still continue to compete at a high level after that rest," Bryant said. "I would prefer to delay any surgical procedure until after our Lakers season, and this summer's Olympic Games. But, this is an injury that myself and the Lakers' medical staff will just have to continue to monitor on a day-to-day basis."

Bryant originally sustained the injury during a February 5th game against the New Jersey Nets. He then aggravated it again during Wednesday's victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves.

If he misses 6 weeks, they might fall out of the playoff pic.

I think there frontline w/ Bynum will keep them in the hunt. But they are going to have a hard time scoring.

All the reports coming out are quoting Kobe as saying he may not have the surgery right away, but ESPN is still saying "could miss six weeks".

Mods, feel free to change the title to KOBE TEARS LIGAMENT so it's not misleading.

Nowitzki? The guy who's shooting less 29.5% from 3 point land this year?

What happened to Turkoglu? Lewis? Ray Allen? Kyle Korver? Derek Fisher?

Bad break for the Lakers if this hampers Kobe too much. They could go from leading contender in the Western Conference to also-ran. But if they are talking about him waiting until after the Olympics, it might not be that serious.

No, it's REALLY bad if Kobe goes down. Especially if you're depending on Odom to carry someone.

I had the same injury before... torn ligament, avulsion fracture where the ligament tears bone off the finger.. but mine was between the 2nd and 3rd finger.

If Kobe can't take a week off and then start playing again with all the medical assistance he'll have...he's a wuss. It's painful, but something you can deal with after a bit of rest.
