ORLANDO, Fla. -- The surging Washington Wizards don't have any room for guard Chucky Atkins.

The Wizards and Atkins agreed on a contract buyout Wednesday, allowing Atkins to negotiate with any team.

In 28 games with the Wizards this season, Atkins averaged 6.7 points and 2.5 assists in 19.7 minutes. He missed several games recently because of the birth of his third child and was placed on the inactive list before Monday's 129-103 victory over Philadelphia -- the Wizards' fourth straight win.

"Chucky is a veteran player who is in the last year of his contract," Wizards president of basketball operations Ernie Grunfeld said. "He has been a real professional and this will allow him an opportunity to look for a situation that will give him the playing time that he desires."

Washington coach Eddie Jordan had said that he likes his current rotation, which has guards Antonio Daniels and Donell Taylor playing backup roles.

Atkins was acquired by the Wizards along with forward Caron Butler from the Los Angeles Lakers for forwards Kwame Brown and Laron Profit last August.

In seven years, the 31-year-old Atkins has averaged 10.4 points and 3.6 assists for Orlando, Detroit, Boston, the Lakers and Washington.

 

I'd guess Memphis will sign him.
