Anyone own one, are they all hype or do they do a great job?? I have really bad allergies during the summer and I'm looking to get a new vacuum that doesn’t just blow dust around like mine does now and hopefully will grab more dirt off the floor..

On a serious note....we have one (DC-15) and it works very well. MUCH better than our old ORECK.

I have this vacuum which is meant to prevent dust from seeping out. Basically you have to fill water in the bottom compartment, and all the dust vacuumed gets trapped in the water. Then you spill the water when you are done vacuuming. Its basically a 4 piece vacuum system. I forgot the actual name, I'll post back later.

Rainbow and they are awesome. It helped with my sons and my asthma. I highly recommend them but they cost money. They come with a 20 year warranty I believe.

WOW.. you weren't kidding when you said they cost some money.. I don’t think I could ever bring myself to spend that kind of money on a vacuum, thank you for the suggestion though..

I agree its well worth it. Every time a traditional vacuum was used at my place, I would have allergies for the next two days. So my options were either A) stop vacuuming altogther B) get wooden floors installed C) get a Rainbow vacuum.

Getting the Rainbow was the least drastic choice of all three.

I agree, but while you shouldnt put a price on health.. at $2,000 I think I just did..

It's some thing I'll keep in mind, but it's a lot more money than I wanted to spend.. Thanks guys

My friend also has allergies. He bought an air purifier and said it helped tremendously. It was a gigantic one from Hunter that has a HEPA air filter and a carbon pre-filter.

Get a Miele... $800-1,000 and they work great. We kept buying crappy ones for $200 or so that would quit working as soon as some one cent plastic piece snapped. Of course, it costs as much as a new one to get it fixed. We've now had the Miele for about 4 years with no problems and when my 3 yo's not standing on it, we beat the bejesus out of it regularly.

The main difference between Dyson and other vacuums, is that Dyson doesn't lose suction as you use it. With other vacuums, the suction starts decreasing as the filter or bag begins to fill.

Get your carpets cleaned, and clean the rest of your place really well. Keep changing the sheets, keep the furniture clean, dust everything regularly, mop the floors, clean the windows, make sure the place is sealed tight (all that stuff none of us like to do), and install a really good electrostatic air filter for your AC/heating intake. It'll help, and will be a lot less expensive. I take Claritin (over the counter) and Flonase (they have generic now) everyday. That helps as well. Good luck!

    (I hate vacuums!)

We've been very pleased with our Dyson.

Pros: as Tmac64 said, "it sucks" and does so very well.
it does not spray exhaust dust
Cons: it is very loud and a bit bulky

Dyson is a very good machine. It is expensive, but the quality is superior to most. I don't own one right now, but I have tested some at work (and have read/seen some of the engineering involved with the machine) in environments that are much more delicate than your house. As far as suction/cleaning/filtering goes it is not as good as our Nilfisk but it also doesn't cost thousands of dollars.

Rashmon is right, though, they are a bit loud, are bulky, and I find the hose attachment to be design over function. But a Dyson will last a long long time.
