Dynamo reward coach Kinnear with 3-ye deal

A month after Dominic Kinnear became only the second coach in MLS history to win back-to-back championships, the Dynamo are making sure he sticks around.

Kinnear has agreed to a new three-year contract that will keep the 2005 MLS Coach of the Year in Houston until at least through the 2010 season, the team confirmed Sunday.

Financial terms were not immediately available. An official announcement is expected today.

Last month, Kinnear, 40, led the Dynamo to their second straight MLS title to mark the first time in 10 years and second time in league history that a team — and coach — repeated as champion. D.C. United and Bruce Arena did it in 1997.

"We believe that Dominic Kinnear is one of the best coaches in the league," Dynamo president Oliver Luck said. "His success with the team over the past two years speaks for itself. We are delighted that Kinnear is under contract for the next three years."

Prior to the MLS Cup, the San Jose Earthquakes, with whom he began his MLS coaching career, were denied permission to engage in talks with Kinnear, who was under contract with the Dynamo through the 2008 season. San Jose's interest, as well as that of other teams, sparked discussions with the Dynamo about a new contract.

In just four years, Kinnear rapidly has become one of the most successful coaches in the league. He has a 53-30-41 all-time record in regular-season play and is 8-4 in the playoffs, including 2-0 in league finals. Aside from consecutive championships at the helm of the Dynamo, Kinnear also won two MLS Cups as an assistant with the Earthquakes in 2001 and 2003.
