I have mixed opinions about mine. I think he is extremely smart, has a great technical mind, but SUCKS as a manager. He is not adept at handling difficult situations, confrontations, or anything even mildly negative. He usually tried to ignore those situations in hopes they will remedy themselves. He's great to go to with engineering issues, but terrible with personnel issues.

His manager is the same way. Anyway, in light of recent events, I thought I'd throw this thread out.

SO, do you like your boss? Tell us a little about him/her!?!?

    Good times.

Yea yea, I ALMOST edited my post to say:

"I don't want to hear from guys like DaDakota that have no boss, or will praise themselves when we know damn well they are in charge." But I digress......

    Hoop-T,

I have had plenty of bosses in my work life and can comment on them. All of them helped me become the boss that I am.

Now, the last boss I had was AWFUL, he was a good friend and one of the smartest guys I have ever known.

He was also an egomaniac who would leave for extended periods of time, let decsions be made, then come swooping in and change everything. Most of the decsions he made were of the subjective matter, so you can understand what this did to team morale.

My relationship with him has still not completely recovered as a friend.

I think being a good manager is much more important than a lot of people realize.

Don't forget Rocketman95, you know he will be kissing some Major asses. :p

I've learned to not like or dislike my bosses. You don't want to dislike them and let that slip and get your self in trouble. You don't want to like them, because there will be times when that friendship will come under fire. Just my opinion.

I've had really three legitimate bosses in my life. The first was a blast and is still a good guy. What do you expect when you are 19 and work at a little music store full of crazy musicians? :)

The second seemed ok but was really an *******. I actually worked for two guys at that job and they were both jerks. It is the only job I've ever just walked out of in my life and that was after five years!

The third was only for a short time and he was a pretty nice guy.

The fourth, though, oh, man, that guy is a COMPLETE ass. Of course, I work for myself, so...

    :D

It would be pretty stupid of me to say I disliked my boss given that I use my real name. Luckily I like her and enjoy working for her very much.

She has an eye towards the career development of her employees, which is a trait people my age tend to underrate when discussing their manager. I think she's hamstrung by a lot of the restrictions our employer puts on cost-- I have been to one external training course in four-plus years here-- but she does a very good job of inventing development opportunities.

That would be my advice to the youngsters out there. When you're starting out, be sure to find a manager who is interested in developing your talents, not just using them.

Thanks DaDakota.....I was only ribbing you a bit. I know you had to have a boss at some point. :D The situation you described is very similar to my manager today, with the exception of us being friends. We are not. But he has a similar style as you described, and he really is a smart man. Someone should have sent him to management school, however.

MoonBus, I couldn't agree more. I have always considered myself very adaptive to most any management style, even an ever-changing one.

I have had some really great managers in my time, and honestly, this is only the second poor manager I have had, ever. But I am basing that on striclty management skills (or a lack thereof).

I may be from the old school, but I thought if you were a MANAGER, you should know how to manage.

    Just my opinion.....

I'm in a tricky situation. On paper, my boss is a dick, plain and simple - a classic kissass opportunist. He can be okay most of the time, but when he is around senior mgmt, it is absolutely revolting to watch this guy in action.

However, my *actual* boss is a very cool guy and one that I consider a friend. He probably knows about this site, but only in general terms (he wouldn't know the address or anything like that). I know he knows that I get on the Net a lot, but unfortunately, my job is like that....one with lots of down time and nothing to do but be bored out of your mind. The funny thing is that technically it is against company policy to use the Internet at work to do things that are not work-related. Yet, I would venture to say that more than 60% of the people here get on the Net and surf around during the day.

I love my boss... she is my manage-her. (at least I try! ;))

Seriously, I don't have one right now, being self-employed, but I've had every kind of boss imaginable. Maybe it's just because I've been around for so long. The days of staying at one company for a career are about over. I would almost say you'd be insane to do it... they don't reciprocate the loyalty. Not in the long run.

I almost never see my boss. I work in construction management, and move around from project to the next project. As long as things are completed under budget and ahead of schedule, no one even agknowledges my existence.

It is really funny if there is some kind of important meeting for bonding or with a prospective client. My boss will do a 15 min quiz on our qualifications, prior experience. It is hilarious, because he gets so nervous in front of the client, practically licking their shoes while shaking with fear.

The new business development meetings are the best. you can just relax and ask prospective clients what they are planning to build and how - timing all that. They love talking to some field construction trash guy like me-- asking good questions about schedule and cost. This makes my boss so uncomfortable - he will change the subject and actually hurt the discussion with disruptions.

So I guess my boss is an ok -absentee manager, but is poor in marketing-gettin new work.
