It appears that Disney has chosen the Blu-Ray format for the next gen of media to go into the HD world...

On my dvd of Cars (great movie btw) there is a section in the bonus features , maybe the sneek peeks, that advertises Blu-Ray.

So much for HD-DVD? I guess? If Disney is backing Blu-Ray, and Sony is pushing it, looks like it may prevail.

    HD-DVD = Beta Max

Disney pledged exclusive support for Blu-ray a long time ago (maybe a year or so), along with Fox. I think both were actually involved in the creation of the format (not as much as Sony, but they had their say...more so Fox than Disney though IIRC).

So Disney, Fox, Sony, and a couple of other studios I can't think of at the moment support Blu-ray exclusively. Warner and Paramount support both, although their support for HD-DVD has been better so far. Universal is exclusive to HD-DVD.

If anyone is curious, here are some of Disney's future plans regarding Blu-ray releases:

I think they have plans for POTC too, but I forget what they were at the moment (think they were planning on releasing it when there were more players available).

I wonder if Blu-Ray will stay in the vault too.

So, your thinking is since Disney chose Blu Ray and kids have to have their Disney videos so...Blu Ray wins.

I guess it could work out that way. Then again...there may be enough room for both formats and, with the chip technology to support both formats in a single drive, the format wars may not mean so much...unless your using your gaming console as your DVD player.

I was just about to ask you... "you just bought CARS, didn't you...?" :)

Well, what if they DO decide to make HD-DVD later? You know, they STILL make FULL-screen DVDs...

    RC,

How much does Sony pay you to come on to message boards and pimp their stuff?

I guess that's part of my logic. It does appear that more kid/family friendly companies are going w/Blu-ray.

I think it is a huge market that could go either way, but it may just indicate that Disney is aiming themselves more at PS3 owners then to XBOX 360 w/ HD-DVD adapter owners.

It seems like a good move on Disney's part to choose the format that comes built-in to a gaming system, and not the one that is an after thought add-on.

Not to be a cynic, but these are cartoons...it's not like we're talking about seeing Halle Berry on Die Another Day or something...

Just another way for the man to take my money...

Perhaps you should look into the amount of money Disney makes annually from movie sales?

Please tell me this was some bad joke and not what you really think.

I don't think they'd like me promoting their competitor's biggest holiday release, nor would they like me criticizing their handling of the PSP (among other things). I'm partial to their philosophy on a lot of things (Linux support, state-of-the-art tech, free online play, Blu-ray, etc., not to mention their latest stance on open standards, at least with the PS3), but that's about it.

And this was certainly a strange thread to bring this up. I don't think I really said much about Sony in this thread, although I guess I was promoting Disney...you guys ever wonder why ESPN hired Jon Barry? ;)

Response to blu-ray hasn't been all that positive early. Disney would hope that PS3 (if they even care that much) could force the public's hand in just accepting BR outright.

From the post ive seen, its seems that HD-DVD has been better so far. The only bad thing is that some stores like Best Buy I hear are pushin for BluRay DVD player sales rather than HD-DVD because of the profit they get for selling BR over HD-DVD, sad really..

Besides, didnt p*rn go with HD-DVD? That alone may even things out with this exclusive crap...

I've only heard of one p*rn studio pledging support, and they're exclusive to Blu-ray:
    http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=298
That was all the way back in January when they announced that though.

There might have been some other studios that went with HD-DVD though...I'm not exactly all that experienced with the industry.

Sorry I'm not up-to-date with technology lately.. but what is Blu-ray ? I do know that HD-TV is some sort of big TV, kind of like a flat screen.. Is it really all that great? Can someone post pictures comparing Blu-ray or HD-TV to regular TV?

Blu-ray and HD-DVD are the successors to DVD basically. They provide more capacity than DVD, and movies on the formats can be displayed in full HD (up to 1080p). Wiki articles on both:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HD-DVD

    LOTR HD vs SD/DVD:

You might want to check it out for yourself in person though. Kind of hard to show examples like this. Maybe check out a Bestbuy with a HD-DVD/Blu-ray player hooked up to a 1080p TV or something.
