I just paid off all my credit cards. I got the next bill for my biggest one, and it said I owed $72.24 in finance charges and $47.12 in credit protection fee. This is for the period after I paid it all off.

    Am I missing something?

call the CC company and find out what the heck is going on? Maybe since you've recently paid them off, they forgot to waive those charges?? Did they receive the payment late, that would result in some charges? CC companies want your money and it looks like they want even more money after you paid them off. Definately give those people a call and find out whats up.

Anyway, now that you have them all paid off, cancel the old cards or the ones with the highest interest rates and cut em up, maybe keep one for emergencies....

RM95, glad you figured it out, but I was going to tell you what happened to me - Credit Card Companies are evil.

You get caught in an endless loop - the statement they issue has the correct finance/interest charge on the day they print it - by the time you receive it, pay it and mail it and they apply the payment to the card, you have already accrued a bunch more interest, which you don't see until the NEXT statement.

Those "credit protection insurance" things are a scam. $47.12 charged to make sure they keep getting their money? Bogus.

Before you cut them up, remember that you can call them and ask for a better rate, lower fees, etc. If you are all paid up it is completely legit to say 'i'm a good and responsible customer and if you want to keep me you give me a better deal than what I'm currently getting. Otherwise there are plenty of other CC companies that would like my business." Its effective and CC's aren't a bad thing if you can keep some of these ridiculous charges and fees off.

And if they say they cannot cut your rate, ask to speak to a supervisor.

At one of my CC companies, the twits that answer the phone cannot change your rate-- but the supervisors are allowed to and if they can (meaning you haven't had a rate cut or deliquency in the last several months), they're usually more than willing to.

    :) :D ;) :p
