What's up fellas? I've got a computer problem right now. Actually, I wouldn't call it a problem, more like an annoyance. Anyway, when I start up my computer, it takes a long time because a lot of programs are loading. The thing is I have no clue what these programs are and they really don't do anything for me. When I do ctrl+alt+del and get the task manager, there's at least 15 items in this list, and they just annoy me, so I just end all but like 4 of them. My question is...how do I keep these programs from loading to begin with? Is there a special folder where I can just delete it all and they'll no longer load on their own? Or do I have to go look up each individual program and figure it out on my own? Also don't you hate it when you slowly slip into a nice deep and peaceful sleep and suddenly someone starts pounding on your door because they want to ask you something? Damn that sucks... Also, I think someone should bring up the Rockets Haiku thread, it's been a while since we had good Haiku...
I would try Start/Programs/StartUp and see what's there. If there's anything you don't need, you can safely delete the items in that folder. At least that's how it works on Windows 98 & ME.
Start -> Run -> type 'msconfig' (w/o the quotes) Click the 'startup' tab all the way to the right. Uncheck that which you don't want to start.
Hmm I don't have a Startup tab Otto... I do have a "General" tab which asks about startup. Startup selection - Normal startup - load all device drivers and software - Diagnostic startup - interactively load device drivers and software - Selective startup (comes with check boxes) *Process system.ini file *Process Win.ini file *Load static VxDs *Load startup group items *Load environment variables Should I go with selective and uncheck startup group items? Traj: Most of the programs that load up aren't in the startup section. Thanks Anyway
If you have Windows 2000...try this... Start Settings Control Panel Administrative Tools Services Check out all the services that start automatically. If there are any that do not need to be started, then stop them and set them to Manual. Make sure that they are un-needed. Some services are required in order to make Windows run properly.
Windows ME has the startup tab on the display you get when you type 'msconfig'. You should see 7 tabs across the top - General, system.ini, win.ini, Static VXDs, Startup, Environment and International. Are you sure that General is the only one you see? Startup should be there. Generally, you can safely uncheck everything except 'scan registry' and 'systray'. If you find that you unchecked something you need, you can always check it again.
Good call bobrek... When I checked this morning, I was in a bit of a rush and just looked to the far right without even noticing "startup" buried in the center. I checked off most of the stuff and now the computer starts up much easier. Thanks Everyone I'm just sad no one else had any Rockets haiku...
I don't know about Windows ME, but in 2000 or XP you can check the registry for programs that startup. Start - Run - Regedit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - Software - Microsoft - Windows - Current Version - Run Anything in there will start. Be careful with the registry though - only delete if you are sure it is junk.
