Interesting situation is happening to a friend of mine and I thought I would throw it out there to see what anyone might know. In the past week or so my friend has gotton an odd alert message while she has been on her computer (or when she tries to log on). It basically will say that someone is trying to or already has logged on to her machine and that she needs to reboot if she wants to stop them. I have never heard of such an error message, but she said it has happened more and more. Now, she is also in the process of a divorce/separation and she feels that it is either her husband or his father or something and they are trying to get information from her. Such a feat seems way too complicated for the guy and what I know about his father, so I have no idea. Now, my friend is not all that computer savvy so for all I know she is telling me confused informaion and it could be pop-ups or something while she is on the internet. I don't know. Has anyone heard of such things? Am I correct in assuming that your average computer user would not be able to remotely hack into a computer? I have told her just to turn off her dsl when she is not on and maybe look into firewall protection or something. Better ideas? Thanks.
If she does not have a firewall I would HIGHLY recommend it. Everyone should have a firewall on their machine, I feel it is as necessary as virus protection. Taking the computer off of the internet is the only for sure way that they cannot hack into it and isnt a bad idea.
ABSO-FREAKIN-LUTELY! I told a client of mine this the other day....if you are surfing the net without virusscan and firewall...you are playing russian roulette with a fully loaded gun. as for your friend's problem....I have never seen a Microsoft alert stating such....seems like one of those popup ads that try to scare you into buying their security product. Ask her if the borders of the message look like a browser border without the toolbars. a Linksys consumer broadband router/firewall would be a good investment....they arent that expensive...and then after installation...if that message comes up...we would know if it is a popup or not.
