I finally talked my wife into letting me get a new computer. I want to decide which processor to get. In the past I have always gotten Pentium because the AMD chips were not up to par with them. Now they are catching up and even surpassing them. I want to solicit opinions on which type I should get. To help you out a little i will tell you wha ti plan on using my Comp. for. I do a lot of gaming and internet work so i want something that can handle the load of todays games. i plan on buying a top of the line(by todays standards) system. I will be going with a 2.0 GHZ or the AMD equivalent. Money is not a concern so I don't have to go with the least expensive. I want the computer to last about 3-4 years. My current system is 4 years old and beginning to be on the low performance end of what i use it for. GIve me some ideas. What would you get and what are the reasons behind your choice?

Are you buying an OEM or building yourself?

Intel definitely has nice processors, but right now the best value is the AMD Athlon XP. It's also a GREAT performer and very reliable as well.

My neighbor is a chip designer at Intel. He was shocked about the new Athlons. He said he couldn't blame me when I purchased a dual Athlon recently.

I use it for software development and SQL server; the Athlons are very impressive (the 2 GB of RAM and RAID didn't hurt, either).

    I purchased from Xi.

Wait just a bit tho . . .wait about a month if you can -- there is a NEW Athlon XP coming based on the .13 micron process. It'll be the "Thoroughbred". Although, if you are buying OEM, you likely wouldn't see that chip until about 3 weeks after it comes out.

Personally, I can't wait for the Clawhammer. Looks very interesting.

Thanks for the help. I am going OEM because I don't have the time to build it myself right now. I think from the responses I got I will probably go with the Athlon(the way i was actually leaning, but wanted to make sure I was making the right decision).

I just bought two Dell Pentium 4 machines (4400, 1.6GHz), and I love them. But I can't really compare the Athlon or anything since I've not used an AMD machine since I had a 450MHz one back a couple of years ago.

I've been using two Celeron machines (366MHz and 433MHz), so I've obviously taken a huge step forward computerwise from what I was using.
