My grandfather was a coin collector, and I've recently come into possesion of quite a few old coins that he left for me. Lots of silver dollars, silver quarters, dimes, and even some old domestic and foreign currency. I don't have a clue what all of this is worth, or even what all of it is. I'm sure it has some value though. Anybody know where a good place would be for me to start looking in order to get an idea of what I've got? I wouldn't mind taking them to somewhere in town to have an expert look it over, but obviously I'd want someone that I could trust isn't going to try to jack anything from me. Or if there are any websites/books that you think would be beneficial for someone looking to get the basics of coin collecting. Thanks!
I'm really into dollar collecting instead of coin collecting, but my collection is a lot less valuable these days.
check on ebay and see how much your type of coins are selling for.. most sellers probably put up pictures too so it's a good resource
Harrisment....I know a place that will do it for you!! I encountered the same situation when my folks sold their house and moved out of it earlier this year. They gave me a big bag of old silver dollars and foreign currency from their trips to other countries. Go to Royal Coin and Jewelry. Here is their website. Their phone number is 713-664-0881. They are on Beechnut, just inside 610, in a strip center across the street from Lowe's. There is a guy named Garth who is their coin expert, and he will value what you have and make you an offer. He works there maybe 2 or 3 days a week. Call ahead.
One question for you....did you have to leave your coins with him for a few days? Just wondering if I should get a full inventory of everything I have before dropping them off somewhere. Did you end up selling to them?
Garth did it while I waited. Took him about half an hour. I wouldn't worry about doing a full inventory, they are very trustworthy. I wound up selling to them. Didn't know what else to do with the stuff.
