ORLANDO, Fla. — After saying they wouldn't take a vote before Wednesday morning, the NFL just announced that the overtime proposal passed today.

The competition committee recommended that overtime be changed for the playoffs only. Under the new format, if the team that wins the coin toss scores a touchdown, the game is over.

If it kicks a field goal, the other team gets a chance to tie the score or score a touchdown to win.

If the game is tied after each team has kicked a field goal, it's sudden death, and the first team that scores wins.

Team owners voted 28-4 in favor of the proposal.

There are rumblings that since this was almost unanimously voted Yes on, that the owners will discuss including the new format in the regular season as well.

LOL @ the NFL trying their best to not have "ties" like in "Soccer"... but playoffs is OK... just like in knockout stages...

We know many of you have questions about the new overtime rules, so let's try to answer another.

Some of you have asked what happens if a team recovers an onside kick on the first kickoff of overtime. In that scenario, the recovering team could win the game on a field goal. The rules read:

"A kickoff is the opportunity to possess for the receiving team. If the kicking team legally recovers the kick, the receiving team is considered to have had its opportunity."

So a team could get a "walkoff" win by recovering the kick and going in for a score. Sudden death rules would then apply. The same rules apply if the receiving team fumbles a kickoff.

In theory, this could make coaches more bold to open overtime. They could fail to recover the onside kick, still hold the opposing team to a field goal, and get the ball back.

In practice, we suspect most coaches will avoid risking so much field position, just like in regulation.

Very interesting because now do you want to Receive or Kick? I would assume Kick if you have mad defense only letting the receiving team perform a field goal attempt.

Why would you give the other team a chance to win the game with a touchdown without giving yourself that chance first? Instead you would be giving them at least a chance at a field goal, meaning you would HAVE to score on your possession to keep the game going.

Seems like it'd be a lot easier to just say both teams have a chance to get the ball...and both team must play defense.

Well that works in college, but I guess they don't want the games going into multiple overtimes, to much risk for injury probably a major factor.
