mar1juana bust adds bruise to Blazers' battered image

A day that Trail Blazers coach Maurice Cheeks had set aside for his team to step back and relax turned into tumult Friday after co-captains Damon Stoudamire and Rasheed Wallace were stopped and cited on misdemeanor charges of possessing mar1juana on Interstate 5 south near Chehalis, Wash.

Stoudamire and Wallace were returning to Portland from Seattle after the Blazers' 89-85 victory over the SuperSonics on Thursday at KeyArena when the vehicle they were passengers in was stopped for speeding shortly after midnight.

Stoudamire, Wallace and the driver, identified as 43-year-old Edward L. Smith of Portland, were cited and released after an officer stopped their vehicle at 12:02 a.m. on suspicion of traveling 84 mph in a 70-mph zone.

Washington State Patrol Sgt. Rob Huss smelled burned mar1juana when he approached the open passenger window of the yellow Hummer H2, which is registered to Stoudamire.

Huss requested assistance from local police, who sent a drug-sniffing dog to help search the vehicle, Lt. Marty Butler of the Washington State Patrol said. Huss found mar1juana "residue" on the floor in the front and back of the car and a "couple of grams" of mar1juana in the unlocked glove compartment.
