Avast! antivirus is free and uses resident provider protection, which is pretty much the most stringent type. Combine that with Microsoft Defender to defend against spyware and you'll be completely set.
ad-aware - must for any computer Anti-Vir Software - I've used it for the past year and haven't had any problems with viruses whatsoever, real-time monitoring. That should be enough for any computer
