OK... I was wondering, how bad is it for your brakes when you slam them? I have had to slam on my brakes about 3-4 times in the past couple of months and was wondering how bad it is for them? Today a car just pulled out right in front of me, I had to slam them to stop and afterwards I was thinking, how bad can this be for my brakes? I have a newer car, a 2000 Honda. Any mechanics, shade-tree mechanics or car enthusiasts that could answer this question? Thanks! rH
Really, it's no worse than regular use. What is bad is to ride them or lightly tap repeatedly. That causes minimun contact between brake shoe and rotor or drum, which can wear the surface faster. Slamming on the brakes creates a solid contact between the two, which causes less wear.
