iPod is the first digital audio player to pack up to 1,000 songs and 10 hours of battery life into an ultraportable package you can take everywhere. While other music players available today compromise between large storage capacity, easy portability, and high-quality sound, iPod combines all these features, along with Apple’s legendary ease of use, to provide a superior
solution for taking your entire music collection with you wherever you go. Key features include the following:

    • High capacity. The 5GB hard disk drive can store up to 1,000 songs.
    • Ultraportable. Measuring 2.43 by 4.02 by 0.78 inches and weighing only 6.5 ounces, iPod easily slips into a pocket to take with you anywhere. The rechargeable lithium polymer battery offers 10 hours of continuous playtime.
    • Premium sound. A powerful built-in amplifier and high-quality headphones enable iPod to output audio in an extremely wide dynamic range. This allows you to hear heart-thumping bass and crystal-clear highs for a superb listening experience.
    • Easy navigation of your music library. An intuitive interface and unique scroll wheel provide easy one-handed operation and let you quickly pinpoint the song you want. A high-resolution LCD displays up to six lines of artists, album titles, playlists, or songs, and a white LED backlight enables clear readability in low-light situations.
    • Seamless integration with your Mac. iPod uses FireWire to transfer music automatically from your Mac—updating your music collection and charging the iPod battery at the same time. It works with iTunes, allowing you to manage your music and create custom playlists on your Mac that automatically transfer to iPod whenever you plug it in.

iPod has a storage capacity of 5GB. The amount of music it can hold depends on the compression rate of your songs. At 128 kilobits per second (Kbps), the most common com-pression rate used for MP3s, 5GB is equivalent to approximately 1,300 songs, or 130 CDs. At a higher-quality 160-Kbps compression rate (the default setting for encoding MP3s in iTunes), 5GB equals approximately 1,000 songs, or 100 CDs.

iPod supports most of the popular audio formats, including MP3 (from 32 Kbps to 320 Kbps), MP3 Variable Bit Rate ( VBR), AIFF, and WAV. Upgradable firmware enables support for future audio formats.

Oh, sweet mother of all that's holy! :)

    What a geek. :D

Looks pretty cool, but other than the Firewire, I don't see what extra it offers that others don't already.

And for cryin' out loud, can't you guys squeeze an AM/FM tuner into one of these things?!?!!?

It doubles as a hard-drive (at that size??), recharges as it syncs, and can transfer an entire cd at ungodly speeds.

    Do that over USB.

There needs to be a decimal somewhere between those numbers before I think about buying it.

Hell I could bring in the actual artists to play the songs for me at that price.

Compared to what other mp3 players have and are priced at, its a steal. Just another of the many great innovations by the gang in Cupertino. :)

Well then apparently I could rent out a stadium and have the artists come put on a concert for me for the price of these other mp3 players.

Being as technologically impaired as I am, what exactly does the above device provide except the ability to carry around a crapload of songs with me and to be able to play them when I want. I mean as someone who listens to a lot of music that's very good and all, but for that price it seems limiting myself to my pc and the radio is just fine.

How many people actually need a portable 5 GB hard drive? I've got a LS-120 on my PC that stores 120 MB, and I rarely fill one of those disks.

Recharges as it syncs... big whoop. If it takes a few seconds to sync, are you telling me it's fully re-charged by the time it syncs? If not, then it's a marketing ploy that's apparently fooling people into thinking it's "cool". It seems no different than me plugging the thing into a wall.

Transferring entire CD's at "ungodly speeds" is actually a good point.

Still the $399 pricetag is a bit high for what it offers. For that price gimme a freakin' AM/FM tuner in it, too!!!

It looks pretty tight, but I'm either at my computer or in my car...I don't need a $400 walkman with 20 minute skip protection. I just don't see the point of paying extra for that much storage when you could get a Rio for half the price.

Now what is cool is the Blaupunkt cd/mp3 head unit I'm gonna get for my car. At $299 at Fry's, it will be money well spent.

I love MP3 Players. I use them when I'm jogging. I can pick the songs I like to work out to. It makes the workout 10x easier than if I didn't have it. Right now I can only store 25 songs. And after a while you get bored of the same songs so you must change them up. Having that many songs would be GREAT! It was worth my investment at 25 songs. I would buy one if I had a mac. The MP3 players is a good investment, but I thought Jeff was against pirating????

Just because you have mp3's doesn't mean you're pirating. :)

Besides, the 5 gig drive in it allows you to transport files other than mp3's, but I don't see any value in that for myself. I can see how a few people may have a need for it or at least find it useful, but only those that work around Macs.

DBC said this is an innovation. I just don't see an mp3 player as an innovation especially when you need a Mac to work the thing. MP3 players with hard drives have been around for months. This one just happens to have a few more features. It's like saying you've had video cards for years and somehow the latest and greatest is an innovation.

    An iMac this ain't. :)

Is the connection only FireWire? Is this only for Mac users? Anything that's exclusive to the Mac crowd is doomed to fail based on Apple's small market share. Even if PC users do want this (I do), many people don't have FireWire capability (I don't). Apple can create cool crap until they're blue in the face, but if it's not marketed to a broad range of people (i.e. the 90% that use IBM-compatible computers and have USB/serial connections), it'll die a short-lived, unknown death (which would be a shame). If this player is indeed Mac-exclusive, and Apple's goal is to lure consumers over to the Macintosh side (an assumption to say the least), I don't see this ploy working. If PC users didn't get excited over OS X (which, I will admit, is very cool), I seriously doubt this will. I'm certainly not willing to trade in my home-made PC for a Mac due to this player (but OS X did make me waver slightly).

For now, I think I'll stick with my Samsung Uproar MP3 phone...

By the way, I'm using the intel MP3 player. It has am/fm, but I hardly ever use it. I also bought, at one time, the Nomad 'Juke box' which held like 500-1000 songs, but eventually it crashed. I think because of the jogging. So to protect the players now I wrap them in ceran wrap to keep the moisture out. That has worked even when it's raining in case you wanted to know.

I actually think it looks damn sharp. I've been wanting to get a MAC as a second machine so I'd be a little more well rounded anyway.

My biggest question is this: 20 seconds of skip protection and a hard drive. It seems to me that their marketing this as something you can use while jogging--certainly one of the best uses of machines like this. Still, wouldn't the jogging dramatically reduce the life of a hard drive? Hard drives are pretty delicate.

    Question,

I have a handspring Visor Edge and there is an MP3 player for it.
Anyone know about where I can get it or the capacity/quality etc?
