OK, does anyone know of some good houses or apartments in either of these cities. I'm looking to spend somewhere between $600-$900 a month.

Actually, looking for apartments in either city isn't that hard. Houses to rent, on the other hand, isn't as easy. If any of you know of any houses, or complexes to stay away from, I'd appreciate it.

I guess you want to know the areas I'd like, huh?

Houston: Memorial, Galleria, Heights, that general inner-loop area.
    Dallas: Just north of downtown.

    Thanks guys.

No, this doesn't mean that Austin is out. It's just that it's easy for me to look for stuff here.

    Location, location, location....

Having grown up on the tough streets of Sugar Land, I can appreciate some of the nicer neighborhoods. :)

HOUSTONSome really nice apartments are located around Richmond and Westheimer not too far from the Galleria. The Memorial area is pretty nice too. Of course the Med Center/West U area is tight if you can afford it. Whatever you do, stay away from Sugar Land, surburban hell.

AUSTINI'll be moving to Far West this fall. Beautiful neighborhood with Greenbelt views all around and close to MoPac. Aside from Far West, I really like the Great Hills/Arboretum area. Even better views than Far West, but a little further from the city. If you're really into a nice place, try the 620/2222 Volente area. Some nice ass apartments there really close to Lake Travis.

FYI, there's some new apts. across the street from my office (Parmer South Campus) that are half empty and dirt cheap (Mandalay).

DALLASDon't know much about this place, but stay away from Fort Worth. Los Colinas is okay if you're a techie. NoMo (North Mockingbird) area is cool. Just north of downtown, pretty close to SMU campus.

I like Ft. Worth. :)

Actually, I know where I'm going to be if we end up in Austin...Spicewood Springs and 360.

I must respectfully remind you that he said Fort Worth, not Dallas. Fort Worth is a LOT different from Dallas in terms of people being down to earth. I actually like Fort Worth, even though I'd never want to leave Houston (unless I got a job in entertainment law in LA).

As for the question at hand....I live in a condo just inside the West Loop and south of 59. I love it. It is an older complex so the units are large and utilities are paid. It's a pretty good area.

If you're looking to rent a house, you may want to drive around Bellaire, West U, and Afton Oaks. From time to time I see nice houses in these upscale areas for rent.

Good luck....I hope I was of some help.

Damn, RM95, I plan on moving to S.A. next spring and will rent my 2/1 Heights home, HUGE backyard, central air, a metal studio/work room in the back pretty cheap.
Still got a few fix-ups to do but its gonna be a sweet deal when I do.
I just want a hassle free tenant.
    Keep in touch.:)

    mr_oily,

I'm as hassle free as they come. If we get Houston, then I'll be sure to sign a 6 month lease so I can have a chance at the place.

I know his personality in real life, RM95, how is the Dallas-Ft-Worth area even an option?

Houston is where it's at, and if you do move down here, we can just hang out down here. :)

In all seriousness. if north texas comes up with best offer, you should take it.

As for me, No way will I ever live long term in Dallas (unless a high-paying job requires me to.)

That is where I live and it is great! The prices are affordable and the area is clean. Not ghetto at all and lots of stuff around to do. Clubs, bars, and all types of restaurants are like 5 minutes away. Downtown is like 5 minutes away. The Love Field airport is like 15 minutes away, so everything is convenient for you...

    Refman,

Actually, it is Dallas. I was just commenting on the anti-Fort Worth comment.

For both Dallas and Houston, I've heard the Alexan at Congress is pretty good. The Alexan is in the suburbs, but not too far away from downtown. Only about 2 1/2 hours to downtown Houston and 3hrs to downtown Dallas.

I live in Dallas and am not at all pretentious. (actually, I live in Plano, which is arguably worse). I actually like being the one (or one of the one's) who's different. Ironically, I feel out of place in places where I fit in (which is one of the reasons I dislike Austin. There's just too many people just like me there).

But I don't know of any houses to rent anywhere.

Just for the record, for $600-900 in the Houston areas you described, you can basically confine your search to the Heights, in the square that comprises 610 on the north, I-10 on the south, I-45 on the east, and Shephard on the west, as far as places that would actually fit your budget and be places that you'd actually want to live without guns.

I'm paying ~ $600/mo for a nasty old room basically large enough for myself and my keyboard on the corner of Montrose & Westheimer. Move towards the Medical Center and the prices go up logarathmicaly.

The only things in the Galleria area are $1,000,000 houses for sale, and homey little 3,000 unit apartment complexes.

Basically, the Heights is all that's really left.

Anyone know of a good house or apartment in Kerrville, Boerne, or the northwest suburbs of San Antonio... must allow cats... oh, that's right, those areas just flooded. No housing for me for awhile.... :(

(sorry, just letting off steam... for Austinites or wannabe Austinites, my neighborhood at Parmer and Metric is getting cheaper... instead of raising our rent this time, they lowered it by $100. Don't want to commute to Kerrville from here though.)

In Houston, check out the apartments near the Medical Center, off Kirby near Braeswood, and Brompton between Braeswood and Holcombe. Nice places, decent rents, and close to everything.
