I've read several review saying the game is a victim of too much style and not enough substance. Essentially, once the novelty of the comic book graphics wears off, you're left with a very mediocre game.

I agree with that completely. It looks cool but once you get used to it everything gets pretty bland. Not enough good gameplay for a 50 buck buy. I'd look for it whenever the price drops, though.
