I'm thinking of going in August. I'll probably take about two weeks, anybody ever been/have recommendations?

I'll probably do what comes naturally to me where I'll just buy a ticket coming and going from Istanbul and then work my way around the country with whatever suits my fancy, though I'll probably just pick one region and then explore it rather than frantically trying to see the whole country in 12 days. I wish it was like last year where I'd have a month or more to pick around the whole place but it ain't the same.

oh yes, and let me just say in advance - ha ha those airplane! turkish prison jokes are really funny and not at all stale.

It's been a long time since I was there....

You could easily spend a couple of weeks in Istanbul.

The western coast is pretty great...a lot like greece, but somehow nicer.

Cappadocia is a pretty cool place to see.

Unless you want the college party crowd, why not wait until early September when the kiddies are back at school?

Well the regions where I am likely to head are probably not very collegiate or partyish, I will probably head east from istanbul rather than do the 'beaches' thing, probably towards Trebizond or maybe even Lake Van if it is safe enough. Mountains and rustic stuff off the beaten path is where I tend to head when traveling.

    very cool.

when I was there, there was a little thing called the gulf war going on with fighting on the eastern border so i stayed west (told you it was a long time ago).

I don't know if you can expect to top your last trip.

If you do tour west, don't overlook Efes and Cappadocia. They can be overrun by tourists (especially in the summer), but are impressive in their own right. There is a lot more to western Turkey than drunken college kids and Australians.

I know it, the only traveling thread I could start would be a "I am going to Wharton, any ideas?"

My uncle's wife is from Turkey. They're only like 6 years older than me, though, so I don't really consider them an uncle/aunt.

    I've never been though. :p

I went to turkey once, it was a nice country, i sort of forgot were i went, somewere on the west coast. I liked the country(i only stayed for 10 days). The people were friendly.

We were at one point with 4 persons, and a salesman talked to us(like they all do) he wanted to sell leather jackets(it was about 40 degrees), so we said we were not interested, he said that that didn''t matter and that we should come inside for a drink. So we went inside and had some ice tea. To make a long story short we left with 3 leather jackets(i was the only one who didn't buy one). So the salesmen are smart :D

Grand bazaar! great place to get leather jackets ^^^ (for cheap) and other trinkets.

Since you're open minded, you should appreciate the blue mosque, its really breathtaking.

And if you have a wifey, bring her to a jewelry store and you can drink turkish tea and eat turkish delight to your hearts content. Turkish delight is so good, I would turn in my siblings for some.

I haven't been to Turkey in forever. We took a bus tour of the country, driving all around the place. Istanbul was cool. My favorite thing from the trip was all the crab apples.
