Ok lawyers and such, quite the interesting situation, that I just found out about and I am a bit ticked. Here it goes: Last October I got a job at a local cafe/restaraunt to be the GM. At the interview they told me the salary was 40k. I got to the first check and it was more like 35k, but it was a big step up from my previous salary, and I had endeavored not to rock the boat. In July we hired a new GM to run our new store in Sugarland. He is an older guy with lots of experience, while I am only 21. I just found out that they hired this guy at 45k a year. Quite a bit more than I make now. I am very angry, this seems wrong. My company has a payscale in place for all of our hourly people, but that large of a discrepancy seems wrong. What do you guys think?
I would inject also that my store has far superior sales and it was the original store in the franchise.
Companies pay what they need to pay to hire any particular person. If you can find a better paying job elsewhere, leave.
Sounds like the case here. A possible situation: owners eager to find someone very qualified and experienced on short notice. This guy says I won't do it for less than $45k and the owners decide it's worth it. Especially when they're starting a new location I'm sure they want everything to go as smoothly as possible. Ageism? Hey, at least you're not a woman.
If the guy is older, then he has probably been in the workforce much longer than you and was probably already making in the neighborhood of 40K+. I have 30 years experience in my job. If I were to move to another company, I am fairly confident I would be making quite a bit more than a 21 year old (or even a 30 year old) that has been in the job around 1 year, even if we are doing the exact same job. That 30 years is worth quite a bit. There is a proven history and there is generally no need for training.
Pay is based on what a company thinks you will work for and not the work you do. I know for a fact that there are people in my role that make 30K+ more than me and I know some that make 30K+ less but thats how it works. If I ever decide to look for other options, the new company will have to fork over 25K more than I make now for me to even think about it regardless of the job.
Yeah, there are plenty of people here who make more money than me because of their degrees (which none of us actually use) even though I'm better than they are. Just a fact of life.
Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 applies to over 40 year olds. http://www.eeoc.gov/types/age.html You're not protected.
You should have negotiated for more money. It sucks, but that's how most jobs work. They have a set pay range for a position and it's up to you to negotiate to get the most that they will give you...also experience does play a factor. Most people with similar jobs within an organization make different amounts of money, and more experienced people usually make more...because of experience as well as knowing to ask for more money in the interviewing process.
What bobrek said. No offense to the thread starter, but it is absolutely comical for a 21 year old guy to think he is going to make more money a year than some dude who is in his 40's and has 2 to 3 times as much experience. We had 2 new people start in my department this week and guess what? They both make more money than me. One of them I can understand because he is in his 50's (I'm 34) but the other I don't understand as a) she's a woman, b) she is less than a year older than me. She might have more experience than me but I have 7 years, so it is possible that she has like 10 years of experience to my 7 but I have a feeling that is a stretch. Yet, there's nothing I can do about it. Welcome to the business world where **** like that happens all the time. The sad thing is if I was being hired in from somewhere else to my present position, I would probably be making about $10K more a year.
If you're pulling down 40K at age 21 (and living in Houston), you ain't doin' too bad. Not to mention the fact that you can quit your job and find a new higher paying one in less than two hours. How do you do it???
Welcome to life. If you wanted more, you should have discussed it, but I think you were wise not to. Just work hard and it will work out. If you resent it that much, find another job. This is petty to sue over, IMO.
