Houston vs. Chicago: Who Can Offer More?

For the Bulls to be telling Melo that Rose will be healthy was like the Rockets telling Chris Bosh that Yao would be healthy in 2010. Yeah, how did that turn out?

Not sure if mentioned, but Jimmy Butler has a salary of $2,119,214 for 2014/15, not $2,008,748. Not a huge difference, but means only a $32,744 difference in the above scenario and that is before the Rockets include losing assets like Terrance Jones, Montiejunas, and Daniels (non-guaranteed).

So in FA, the absolute most the Bulls can offer (while keeping Gibson and Butler at the correct number) is $17,626,706, while the Rockets can come in somewhere around $17,593,962 PLUS another $2.4M if Jones, DMo and Daniels were all gone, too, without new salary coming back.

So, after considering taxes, that is about $11.19M in Houston or $9.85M in Chicago, in starting salary. $1.34M in after tax dollars. That is a pretty hefty difference, before you even consider the raises added onto that yearly. If you add raises, that is essentially almost $6M more in after tax dollars.

 

So... are you sure Noah is younger than Dwight or are you just guessing?

 

If he goes to Chicago, he has to go through the Heat to get to the Finals, while in Houston he'll have to go through the Spurs, the Thunder, the Clippers, the Blazers, etc.

 

The Pacers became irrelevant really quick lol. Wizards were they weren't that relevant but they did beat the bulls this past year... before losing to the now irrelevant Indiana Pacers.

 

Even if he makes it through the Heat, he'd still have to play the winner of the Spurs, Thunder, Clippers, Blazers, Rockets.....Also, in Chicago he'd have to do it with a weaker team. Same goes for Lebron. From a basketball standpoint, Houston is by far the best destination this off-season.

 

Sorry, my bad. Noah is slightly older. But Dwight played 3 more seasons in the NBA and that is a lot for a centers body - plus Noahs play relies less on athleticism. So Noah is slightly older but his body has taken less punishment and he should age better.

 

Yeah having Dwight down low in this nba means a lot with two big time scoring threats around him. One will be open and even in one on one situations your getting a great shot. Defensively they would focus on that first day of training camp on... that's more of something that has to done team wide and each guy will buy in with the addition of Melo or without him after .09 seconds.

 

I was told Noah was older by a friend a few weeks ago you just confirmed he was right because I didn't know either. Yeah I see what your saying though on the wear and tear throughout the years played. Well Dwight is still catch alleys after back procedures I hope that last for years to come. Noah plays really really hard though so I wouldn't be surprised if he has a random injury come up as a big man.

 

It totally matters if you think Houston and Chicago (with Melo) are equivalent. Assume each series in the West is 50/50. Assume each one in the East is 80/20. Now assume the Finals is a 50/50 toss up. These are very rough numbers but your chances improve because you have to get there first.

 

I think its 50-50 with Chicago as the the favorite and its not cause Rose or the coach I think its more cause hes a New Yorker and maybe wants to stay up North but cant stay with Knicks so Chi is the next best thing .......unless he don't care about that then its H-town!

 

This my thing and this might sound crazy to some but how big of an improvement is Carmelo Anthony from Lol Deng when Deng was a allstar and he played with Rose and Noah. Didn't Deng average 20 points per game and play really really good D? How great was that Chicago Bulls team? I know they lost to Miami is the eastern conference finals.

 

Here's the thing. Money wise we're either better or equal. Talent wise, we'd end up equal or most likely with a better/deeper team. As an organization (owner and GM), we absolutely own them. From a coaching stand point they own us.

Now if Melo is serious that this is purely about getting a ring, we must have the edge. They simply can't compete, particularly if we add Lionel Hollins as associate head coach. The deal breaker should naturally be this:

Melo wanted the ring when he went to NYK. He thought he would partner up with another star and make his way in the easy East. That didn't happen because that star never got over his injuries and his contract crippled the team. That incident should clearly tell Melo: don't go with the injured star. He could very well end up in exactly the same situation he's in but NOT in his hometown and playing at a discount. You can ask for input into personnel decisions. You can ask teammates to adjust. You can ask for a coaching change. These are all possibilities. You know what's NOT a possibility? Asking Rose's knee to fix itself. That can't happen. No amount of money, no decision making power can fix the problem of Rose not healing. That's outside everyone's hands. Anything he deals with in Houston can be solved within a year tops.

So why on earth is there anything to consider here? Is the lifestyle really playing a big role? The guy lived in Denver, I'm sure living in Houston is not going to be that big a lifestyle change for someone with unlimited money.

To me, based on his last interview, the decisive factor here is his wife's lifestyle preferences. Not that she's ever going to be a decent actress or going to get back into hosting teen MTV shows. She's going to make money from her businesses no matter where she is, and she can fly in and out on a private jet. Not like Houston's elite schools are any worse/better than Chicago's. It's purely about Lala's lifestyle IMO and I think we may lose out just because he seems like the kind of guy who would make a stupid decision like risking going to Chicago over staying in NYK or going to Houston.

Yeah, I believe that 100%. NYK is a better option for him than Chicago. Because NYK will attract FA's in a year. Derrick Rose may sit out the equivalent of 1 year during Melo's next contract. So what's so special about Chicago when NYK can snap up two stars next summer and can axe Fisher in 6 months if he's not up to task?

Very hard for me to believe we're not the best option because I truly believe Morey will essentially say to Phil Jackson and Melo's agent: whatever Chicago offers you, we will offer you more. Because our wells run deeper, and our existing core is far closer to beating the Heat or the Spurs or Thunder or Clippers. Are Melo and Rose going to beat Westbrook and Durant? Please.

Melo would choose Chicago if he wants the easier road to ECF/Finals. West - nothing is guaranteed. Chicago already has a solid system in place for defense - Rockets are still kind of figuring things out. IT would be nice for him to come here but Bulls seem ready...

Rockets would need some time to gel.

 

actually - Rose would be need to be reintegrated into the lineup as well - I guess bulls have their work cut out for them but Rose would probably play 2nd fiddle for time being cuz of his injury.
