Morey and his little minions need to stop spending so much time trying to prove something so blatantly wrong, whether its about if coaches matter, or about offensive strategies.
http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=254164 It's not on Morey. It's on people like you. How can you expect the team to perform well when our fan base is how it is?
I think when you have bad coaching, the problem is foundational and going further like comparing playoff style basketball and regular season basketball is moot. I think people do overrate the differences between playoff and regular season. It's not like they bring out an entire new playbook with brand new defense schemes. What it comes down to IMO is the shorter rotations and the sense of urgency. Otherwise, I don't think anything else really changes. What you're basically saying is we have bad defense and don't utilize the PnR which is quite effective with our rosters. These issues are true playoffs or not. It's not like we went 82-0 and collapsed in the postseason. Our games against the Clippers gave us a preview of that.
This is on Morey, but not talent so much as a lack of respect for coaching, veteran roleplayers, and the difference between regular season and playoff basketball.
It initially filtered down from Les Alexander a few years ago, wanting to play fast. Now we play fast but the personnel is wrong. I think we're saying the same thing because I agree with your points, except for the different playbook part - we went to Dwight so much in these games which was non-existent in our first 82 games. We didn't practice the style of basketball that we've played in these last 2 weeks, enough. The problem is definitely with the foundation and the reason I'm posting it in the Morey thread and not McHale thread is due to the fact that the front office has a big influence on our play style. Les Alexander wanted to play fast. Morey & co. are making that happen even if this year's personnel doesn't fit it.
Morey needs to let his coach do the coaching. Relying on threes is no way to win championships. Playing disciplined smart ball on offense and defense wins championships...and chucking up as many threes as you can puts yourself in these games. There is a reason why Portland is always in these close coin flip games too...they are pretty much the same team style wise.
We can cover up weaknesses over the regular season, but they will be exposed, badly, in a 7 game series: weak D and bad coaching.
It's not on Morey....yet. He has a lot of pressure on him this offseason though. One more first round loss and he will be an unmitigated failure as GM. And don't give me any crap about him signing Dwight and trading for Harden. What the hell good are those two players being on your team if you can't win a damn playoff series? Morey better take seriously the role of a head coach this summer as he decides what to do about that position. He better understand that championships are won with defense. And he better think long and hard about whether this team needs a third superstar or if they're better served with a deeper, more reliable(i.e. veteran) bench.
-1st year of Howard/Harden -Haven't had chance to fill the roster properly (especially glaring lack of wing defender) Let's see Morey's moves in the offseason. It's great to criticize the GM who got us both Harden and Howard in the first place, but ultimately it's up to the (young) players to commit to winning. Also, this is an excellent post and hits everything on the spot.
Well, he can't very well do that without a competent coach at the helm... Hopefully Morey's learned his lesson, and will assign a compete coach to the position and let him do just that...
Fans don't play the games though. And not every fan in the building post on the internet. Mark these words. All relative. I don't think there is one guy to blame. Everyone had a say in this. Alexander-Dawson-Morey-JVG-Adelman-McHale. Well Morey may be a beast individually but he isn't doing anything spectacular with all the other guys involved.
You have a point. Morey decided to trade AB for somebody who didn't even touch the floor during the playoffs. Could we have used another PG? Absolutely. Morey failed on every veteran FA that was available after the deadline, and didn't even try on Anthony Morrow. This team had holes but Morey did not fill them. Moreyball is a joke. The GM does not need to be calling plays for the team
