The National Spelling Bee is shown on ESPN? I am not complaining but why is it shown on a sport-themed network instead of something like The Learning Channel? I like the Spelling Bee though and am often amazed at the kids who can spell things that I cannot even spell now or will ever be able to spell.

I guess World's Strongest Man or the Lumberjack Championships just don't have the same family appeal that a bunch of kids spelling words does...

Those kids are unbelievable spellers, I think it beats Strong Man Competition or trick shot billiards any day of the week

it would be better if they just taped it and edited it to not include all the "can i have it in a sentence", "what is the root language", "can you repeat it even though i've already asked that 5 other times" stuff. i did spelling bees, won two of them in middle school (then choked at district for some reason), but damn just asking the word and spelling it is all i wanna see. it takes about 5 minutes for each word. and taking 5 minutes for something as thrilling as spelling a word isn't good tv imo.

this morning at 11 i believe espn showed a one hour MATHCOUNTS show. anyone watch that, what the hell did they show there. i did mathcounts too. damn i'm a dork. but at least a dork who won stuff.

I used to do spelling bees... never made it to Washington though. :( (came close one year, but got nervous in the regional final and made a stupid mistake) The problem is, after a point, what do you study? The dictionary? Yeah, right... Since it's single-elimination, even winning the city spelling bee that one time took several instances of luck.

The reason kids ask that the words be repeated, used in a sentence, etc., is mainly that they are stalling for time and trying to think hard about it. The root word might actually give some clue to the spelling. But mostly we're hoping that something will jog our memory. Or, sometimes, we don't actually care about the sentence or whatever. We just want a few seconds to think.

Glad I'm done with that stuff! :)

Luck and nerve. . . just like any competition, including basketball. You have to be good, of course. But mental toughness is extremely important. Then some sprinkle of luck. And hope that you don't have to beat an MJ or a Shaq. :)

GOD. I watched it. I mean.............it's like horrible. These kids are amazing....especially this 9 year old kid in 3rd grade.....who is like Top 4 in the nation in spelling. That's freaky. But jesus. They all take forever and ask all these questions. There was this one Jamaican girl...GOD. Sorry.....but man. She would stand there for fifty minutes and ask the same question over and over until the judge got all pissed and they forced her to spell it.....she finally got out. Lord. She was pretty funny.....

    WHY IS IT ON ESPN?!?

    Chess is on ESPN too...
