AP and Cleveland Plain Dealer report Larry Brown to resign today

YES!!!!!!!!! It's official baby.

We need to start like a COME TO HOUSTON Larry Brown Campaign. lol.....like the Nuggets have a website telling Gilbert Arenas to come to Denver. Man! That is certainly original.

 

it sure looks to me like Brown and Van Gundy are doing everything they can to make themselves available for the Rockets job.

 

who could blame them. Look around the league and this is the best job available. Steve Francis and Yao Ming. What else could a coach want.

Larry Brown will step down as coach of the Philadelphia 76ers after six seasons, two team sources said Monday.


The team called a 4 p.m. ET afternoon news conference, but would not say if Brown is leaving.

Brown reportedly is a candidate for coaching vacancies in Cleveland and Houston.


The sources, who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity, would not give Brown's reason for the move.

According to the Inquirer report, the decision was reached Sunday night, and a reason for the move was fatigue.

Leagues sources told the Cleveland Plain Dealer that with Brown stepping down, former Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy and Portland coach Mo Cheeks would become candidates for the Sixers. Van Gundy is also the front-runner for the Houston Rockets' coaching job.

ESPN.com's Marc Stein reported Sunday that the Rockets received permission to talk to Van Gundy, who is still under contract with the Knicks through July 31. Cavaliers general manager Jim Paxson said he wanted to hire a coach with postseason success and an ability to teach young players.


LeBron James, expected to go to the Cavaliers with the top pick in the NBA draft on June 26, said he would be happy if Brown ended up in Cleveland.


"I think Larry Brown is a great teacher if we can get him,'' James said during an interview at halftime of TNT's broadcast of the San Antonio-Dallas playoff game Sunday night. "I consider myself a student of the game, so Larry Brown would be great.''

Brown was set to meet with Ed Snider, chairman of the 76ers' ownership group, two sources close to Brown told The Associated Press on Sunday.

Snider told the Philadelphia Daily News last week that the team needed to "move on'' if Brown had lost his enthusiasm for coaching the Sixers. Snider also told the paper he thought Brown was leaning toward not returning.


Brown had two years remaining on a contract that paid him $6 million per season. The contract prohibits him from coaching another NBA team if he leaves prematurely, a clause that would have to be waived by the team for him to take another NBA job.


Brown's job with the Sixers was his longest tenure with any team in his 31-year coaching career. He led the team to the playoffs five straight years, including the 2001 NBA Finals, and is to coach the 2004 U.S. Olympic men's basketball team.


The 62-year-old Brown had been contemplating stepping down since Philadelphia lost its second-round playoff series to the Detroit Pistons in six games. The Sixers overcame a mediocre start, won 23 of their final 33 games and finished 48-34 this season.


But after beating New Orleans in six games in the first round, the Sixers couldn't get past the top-seeded Pistons, losing twice in overtime and once on a last-second shot that was goaltended.


Brown came to Philadelphia in 1997, taking over a perennial loser that hadn't been to the playoffs since 1991. With help from then-president Pat Croce, Brown turned the Sixers from a laughingstock franchise into one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference.


In 2000-01, Brown led the Sixers to a 56-26 record and first place in the East. Philadelphia advanced to the NBA Finals for the first time in 18 years, before losing to the Los Angeles Lakers in five games.


Brown won the NBA's Coach of the Year honors that season, the only time he ever won the award. Brown was Coach of the Year in the ABA three times in four seasons.

If Larry Brown is stepping down because of fatigue, why would he be coaching somewhere else next season?

I had said in another thread that if Brown stepped down, it would not be to take another job. I might actually be right.

Yeah it's really up in the air until the 3pm news conference. If Brown is retiring or taking a year off, I would expect him to say so in the press conference in order to take his name out of the running for the coaching vacancies. If he says nothing about retiring or resting in the press conference then we'll know that he is looking for his next challenge whether it be in Cleveland or Houston.

Most coaches have a clause in their contracts that says that if they quit before their contract is up, then they can't go to another team without permission from their former team. That means the team that the coach just left would have to get compensation in order to let them go to another team.

Van Gundy quit, so he didn't get paid the remainder of his salary from the Knicks, but up until his contract expires on June 31st, the Knicks have to give approval before he can even talk to another team. Obviously it's no big deal now, because nobody is going to give the Knicks compensation rather than just waiting until August 1st to sign Van Gundy. That's why the Knicks have give New Orleans, Cleveland and Houston permission to talk to Van Gundy.

Larry Brown has the same clause, but reports out of Philly say that Snider (the Owner) and Billy King won't ask for any compensation if Brown wants to coach elsewhere next year.

 

Love it or lump it, I do believe Larry Brown will be the next coach of the Rockets. Strap yourselves in because it will be one helluva roller coaster ride!

The pieces are starting to fall into place.

And for all of those that are throwing out assistants why not get some good proven teachers like Sac or Dallas has done.

I would love for Les to throw some serious cash at Dunleavy for assistant coach to Brown and then he could be Larry's successor in a couple of years. Maybe toss in a Kareem (who wants to coach) as a big mans coach and a good free throw coach and we have a coaching staff.

Larry Smith should be sent back to golden state for a bag of fries and some secret sauce.

 

Kareem does want to coach. We need a big man coach for Yao. Hakeem would be a nice choice. And Moses Malone has practically begged for the job

 

Im curious to see which players Larry Brown will try to bring with him from Philly if he ends up in Houston. There is no question that Eric Snow and Aaron McKie would be the ideal guard complements to Steve in the backcourt as opposed to Mobley and Moochie. Both guys are extremely savvy veterans that play hard and understand the game. I wonder if Billy King would be willing to part with them for the appropriate package ie Mobley/Cato or something along those lines.

Playing Devil's advocate, LB was actually quoted in a Cleveland paper last season as saying he would like a chance to coach Dajuan Wagner and the other young players in Cleveland. That was before they landed LeBron. I think that is one reason his situation is being followed so closely by their fishwraps.

LeBron stating on national tv that he prefers LB while blowing off Jeff Van Gundy also added fuel to that fire.

It should be interesting to see how this coaching carousel plays out.
