While I never really got into DMB, I have always sort of admired them from afar. They always seemed like an OK pop band with really good musicians (especially Carter). But while driving back from an out of town gig last weekend, my friend put on Busted Stuff and I was totally blown away. From start to finish, that album is amazing, good enough to actually buy instead of download especially Bartender and Grey Street. I know Lillywhite had a lot to do with it and I'm aware of the whole situation with Busted Stuff vs. Everyday. My question is this: If I really like Busted Stuff, which album should I get next? Which one comes closest to that sound and material from Busted Stuff? I know there are a few live albums, but I'd rather start with a studio album. Thanks in advance.
I love all their stuff....Everyday is my least favorite, but I like it too. I guess I would suggest "Under the Table and Dreaming." I suggested it to a high school kid I teach Sunday School to...he came back a few weeks later and thanked me saying it was one of the few albums he owned that he could just pop in and let play through the whole recording. My favorite DMB song is Crush...has sort of a jazzy feel to it. But I don't think it would fit real well on Busted Stuff. So I'd probably suggest Under the Table and Dreaming, their first major studio release.
better yet, imadrummer...go to their concert this summer! this group is so amazing live. i can't wait!!!!
I'd get Under the Table and Dreaming next. I think Before These Crowded Streets is a better album, but I don't think it's a good album to start out on. Busted Stuff and UTTAD are both great starter albums. Then I'd get Crash, then BTCS, then you can get Remember Two Things and finally Everyday. Everyday is not a bad album, it's just one that won't keep your interest like the others. If you really want to hear some DMB, just send me some blank CDs and I'll burn you some shows. Drop me a line at vengeance@typicalsituations.com and I'd be glad to set up a B+P for you. Basically, you send me some blank CDs and postage, and I burn some shows on them and send the CDs back to you. There's nothing quite like live DMB. I've got lots of shows, and it only takes about 4 minutes per disc so I can burn the shows quickly. I'm happy to do it for anyone on the board -- if anyone else would like to get some live DMB shows, I'd be glad to burn them for you. DMB Trivia: The first album was "Remember Two Things" a) What are the two things you should remember? b) What does the Magic Eye image on the cover reveal?
I just bought that CD recently because it was the only one missing from my DMB collection, and I cant really get into it except for a few songs that were radio hits (Stay, Crush, Dont Drink the Water, and Rapunzel). Not their best studio effort IMO. The way I see it is this (for the major label studio albums), and to answer ima drummer's question: 1. Crash - Best by far IMO - go buy it now 2. Busted Stuff 3. Under the Table and Dreaming 4. Before these Crowded Streets 5. Everyday All the albums are great though....
Sorry Drew, I don't. I can get it though, if you want it. I haven't done any trading in quite some time because I'm working on writing a trading list application to manage my albums. When that's done, I'll start trading again (probably early to mid June).
Buy them all, really. If you are going to not buy one, make it Everyday. Definitely. It has a few good pop hits, but you will quickly be bored with it. If you liked BS that much you will like them all, IMO. Crash was the first DMB album to catch my ear(Followed by UTAB, the live albums, BTCS), but I wasn't the fan that I now am until the LWS/BS. And...I agree, Bartender is an excellent song. It rocks both lyrically and musically. If you want to hear some Crash before you buy it, download "Two Step," another beautiful song.
Cool, thanks Vengeance and everyone else. I downloaded Crowded Streets and I'll listen at work tomorrow. If I dig it, I'll buy it. So far, I really like Rapunzel and the one with the strings at the beginning. After that, I guess I'll get Under the Table since it seems to be the most popular answer to my question and I already have Crash somewhere around my apartment. It's really cool to see people have so much passion for their favorite band(s) as opposed to most people who just casually listen to anything on the radio.
I think I have really bad luck. I've been to 3 DMB shows, and each time I have been wholly unimpressed. Everyone always tells me they're the best live act going though.
My favorites are: Crush Two Step I've seen them 4 times...I've never been disappointed. I'm already so excited about their next show. The John Mayer/Counting Crows show is less than a week before, as well. Should be a good week!
