That Lindsey Jacobellis chick does not have the clutch gene. Fell in 2006, got DQ in 2010, and crashed this year lol.

Do yall think the true winner of the olympics, after the children, is the country with the most golds or most overall?

    Germany leads with 8 Golds
    US/Russia lead with 18 overall

Quality over quantity. sochi2014.com does it like this (as do the rest of the world except the US media for some reason)

    Current Medal Count:

    1 Germany 8 gold 3 silver 2 bronze 13 total
    2 Russian Fed. 5 gold 8 silver 6 bronze 19 total
    3 Netherlands 5 gold 5 silver 7 bronze 17 total
    4 United States 5 gold 4 silver 10 bronze 19 total

I'd rather have a few extra golds than a dozen extra bronzes.

If you look at overall you rate a gold the same as a gold. That would be strange. Does the us media really use this rating.

I guess they use whatever lets them appear further ahead in the medal rankings? ;)

    perfect example from nbcolympics.com

    16(rank) Italy 0 gold 2 silver 4 bronze 6 total
    17(rank) Poland 4 gold 0 silver 0 bronze 4 total

    makes no sense to me..

I'm a fan of a weighted medal tally, but no media outlets use it.

But basically 3 pts for gold, 2 for silver, 1 for bronze.
That makes the most sense to me.

Actually I've never seen American media use anything but total medal count, for Summer or Winter Olympics, for as long as I can remember. It's the standard here.

Usually because America has tons of competitors to usually be in the top 3 in total medal count, regardless of whether they're all first or 3rd place finishes.

If I was the media for a nation, I'd go with whatever system makes the country look the best.

SportsCenter posted this picture on Twitter. In regards to our discussion on how media just picks how they show the order. I asked them why the USA was ahead of the Netherlands, did Bronze medals become better than Silver medals all of a sudden?

What are the US hockey (men's) chances against Canada?

I like watching NHL...but don't really follow the individual players too closely...so I'm not sure how the two countries stack up.

Canada certainly has much more talent and is the favorite, but the US roster is composed of good NHL players and a few all-stars, we are more than capable of beating them in a single game without it being a shock.

In the last Olympics, with largely the same rosters, the US and Canada played twice and both games were dead even, and that was in Canada.

Canada has the better roster on paper, but the USA have been the strongest team in the Olympics so far.

    Should be a close one.
