Been on a "The Good Wife" marathon lately and notice that they keep referring to the prosecution as State's Attorney, but on Law & Order they refer to the prosecution as District Attorney even though they do the same thing as the prosecution on The Good Wife. What's the difference?

Seem to have the same jurisdiction? You do understand these are fictional shows set in two completely different cities and states, correct?

The DA represents it's district while the SA represents it's state...?

I give you an F on research. The Good Wife is set in Illinois, which calls the position a State Attorney. Law & Order is set in New York, which calls the same role a District Attorney. They are analogous.

in before: "But if they are analogous, why are they called two different things?"

Stifle yourself...... last thing we want is Hotballa getting angry and blowing up at his wife again.

No idea what the position is on the Good Wife, because I'm a heterosexual male, but a State's Attorney generically could refer to any attorney representing the state in a variety of ways. That means those representing the state in criminal cases, child support hearings, CPS cases, civil suits, whatever. A District Attorney typically represents the state in criminal cases only, i.e. a prosecutor.

In the good wife, the position is only referred to as the state attorney in all matters. They never use the district attorney title. Either way, your plausible explanation seems to be different from juanvaldezs contention that it is the same position but just referred to differently because of different states. Both explanations make sense. :(

But the Good Wife is filmed behind the Key Foods in Brooklyn, in Kings County, where they call it a DA.

    Mind blown - I apologize.

Both sound sensible, but my explanation came with a source to prove it out.

Clutch, can you please just make a Swoly-D/hotballa forum. One always has questions and the other always has answers (not necessarily, correct, but who cares?). They can both be happy asking and answering all day long...and so can the rest of us by not having to see it.

    Thanks!

Fair enough. I've been an ADA for 8 years, but I didn't quote a Wikipedia article to back up my claims. My bad.
