Morey wanted Gogi, not Lin

It wasn't incorrect. I wrote he hasn't talked about it like he's sure. He has talked about it, but it's one thing to say Lin can become X and Lin is or will be X. The point i was trying to make is Morey doesn't hand out larger contracts to players based on what they can become. For that reason, marketing had to play a larger role with Lin than it would have with, say, Dragic. Again, Omer got the same deal, but with a big who's all defense, it's much easier to say he will be X. They'll usually keep producing similarly, despite an increase in minutes/games.

Lin's average salary is not of an average point guard. He's making 8 mill a year. It's misleading to look at his salary just for this year, as the Rockets arranged it differently for their own benefit.

 

Don't confuse quickness and anticipation with athleticism. Lin is probably quicker and anticipates better but that does not make him the superior athlete.

By the way, athleticism is probably the most overrated basketball quality.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, here is my response.

If Morey were to say Lin is absolutely, unequivocally I will bet my job on it going to become one of our franchise cornerstones can you imagine the **** show that will occur. Lin doesn't even see himself yet as the face of the franchise. And morey said that the player that is most likely to be that foundational piece is Lin so i am curious as to what more you want from him. Should more have said absolutely as opposed to most likely? And people have already talked to death about his salary compared to other point guards so I won't even bother with your last statement. Finally Lin is asian so everybody will always assume that marketing played a large role even if it is the case or it is not. It is what it is.

Dragic is still unproven IMO. The media doesn't talk about it as much because he doesn't get the crazy media attention compared to Lin and Dragic's been around longer.

Another reason as to why I feel more nervous with Lin is partly attributed to his style of play. Some people said that Dragic and Lin are similar in their playing styles and I'm not disagreeing completely. But Lin had a tendency to play recklessly without a good control of the pace. It was great when he made an excellent play, but sometimes it resulted in something awful. Again, I don't mean that Dragic doesn't commit this mistake but it was more prevalent for Lin.

Look, I'm not saying he's gonna be nerve-wrecking into watch all season, in fact it's rather encouraging to see the way he led the offense and controlled the pace in the preseason games (minus the spurs clunker). I just hope this continues in the regular season and it wouldn't take long for his shot to be back.

 

I know that is not what you are saying, if I implied that then I misspoke. Anyway I think we agree on a few things. Hopefully I will see more of your analysis as the regular season approaches.

 

Goran lit up the Spurs in the PLAYOFFS a few years ago. Lin had a good 10 game run and has been average ever since. Get real.

Morey's comments suggest that it's pretty obvious he's only here because of his marketing potential, the sooner some of you come around to that the better.

Lin is a good P&R player but with his average handles, athleticism, Bball IQ, vision, shooting & godawful defense he'll never be the superstar some of you are projecting him to be.

His absolute ceiling is Conley/Felton/Sessions which absolutely amazing for an undrafted player.

I dont want anything more from him. It's a situation where he actually said what he meant.

Marketing played a significant role in signing Lin. I'm not sure how that's even up for dispute. Do you think, if Courtney Fortson had a similar stretch, Morey would have offered him 8 mill a year? No way. Morey wouldn't consider that a pg that's proven to be at the level of Dragic, Lowry, etc. (i know lowry makes less, but he's underpaid.) It's a win-win for the team. The final verdict on Lin probably won't be in for another season or two.If Lin is a semi-star or more, then it's a grand slam hit. If he's just a solid starter, then they'll have still earned a ton of money during that time to make up for it. The same can't be said for someone like Fortson.

As for his salary. You keep missing the point. Forget what the rest of the league does. Morey isn't the rest of the league. He doesn't hand out deals based on potential. PGs around the NBA get paid high amounts because they are proven players or have potential to be. (only the former applies with Morey). Remember the draft has had quality points in recent years, so there's enough of them to go around, which raises the salary at that position. Therefore, the average starting point, is not what is generally considered as average talent.
