Sports Illustrated: Rockets offer to Magic was much lower than reported

It was not turned down. Orlando stupidly went with the worst deal. There is nothing the Rockets could do if Orlando wanted the Lakers deal. Which did not give them the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd best player in the deal. Netted them mid round draft picks like the Rockets had this last year in this years draft. They got back nothing on their very own.

 

In fact you want to know how low that deal was that Orlando got back? Think about this.


Houstons offseason alone:
Jeremy Lin
Omer Asik
Lowry for a first round pick
D-mo, Jones, Lamb, White
Budinger netted you a draft pick too

All put together is hugely superior to anything Orlando got back. Lets cut in in half in fact.

Here's what I predict for this thread:

Pro-Morey posterswill read this and concoct some narriative that makes him look good.

The anti-Morey posters will read it and concoct a narriative that makes him look bad.

Everybody will be sure that they know what happened.

And in the end, nobody but Morey and Hennigan will have the slightest idea of how events really unfolded.

 

I don't disagree, but the explanation is the same... "Orlando" is covering their *** because they look stupid. Morey didn't expect to get a superstar for a couple rookies.

This is an absolute nothing story.

From what I read here, it says that we refused to give them all 3 rookies (duh).

So our offer was salary cap relief (which of course involves using Brockman etc)
3 first round picks (it clearly says we'd add a 3rd if it gets the job done)
And 2 of: Morris, Patrick Patterson, Lamb, Jones, White and Donatas Motiejunas.

Except perhaps we withdrew Lamb at the end there.


So how is this vastly different to what has been reported already? Houston takes 2 bad contracts, gives 3 first round picks and 2 prospects (not including Lamb is the only fresh info there...)

 

You know who had a great offseason? The team who builds championships rosters consistently. Thats who. They came away with Steve Nash and Dwight Howard. Armed with no cap space and only Andrew Bynum and no high draft picks. Thats what it took to get to the top once again. From which they really never fall off from. Had no excuses in place. Then still executed very supremely.

 

I don't get it. That is still a better haul that what they got. The article said the offer was

Martin = Afflalo

And since the source is from the Magic and the Rockets sources say something completely different, it is AT LEAST this offer and probably between this and what our sources say.

Something else that isn't even mentioned in the article? The Rockets offer on draft day. I'd bet money the deal looked like:

2 of the 3 first round picks that night
Mavs pick
Martin
Lowry
Morris or Patterson (and/or other guys on the roster)

And Hennigan refused.

I'm convinced Hennigan spent two months playing hardball (and leaking nonsense to the press) to win major concessions from Morey. Orlando saw that we had $100 in the bank and wanted $90 on the table for a guy Morey valued at $30 and no other team in the league could/would offer more than $25 for.

Morey rightly didn't play along. Hennigan was running a crazy auction trying to run up the price with one real bidder and a bunch of make believe ones.

I've got no problem with him taking thins off the table. In fact, I was posting in July that he should do just that.

Hennigan's got no one to blame but himself that he missed out the chance to sell high on Howard. No one but him to blame that he still ended up getting ten cents on the dollar for Howard.

They can continue to play all the press games they want and tell the media whatever they feel like. There's no spinning the reality when they suck hard for the next 4 years with bloated contracts, crummy vets, no young prospects but Harkless, and junk draft picks spread out over the next 6 years.

 

Rockets has been a lottery team for 3 years already and has nothing to lose not matter whether Howard want to stay here or not.

 

The issue is that even the absolute lowest of lowballs that has been realistically discussed still exceeds what the Magi got.

 

it's not. you don't know how Lamb's pro career will turn out. You knew even less before the Summer League when that offer was on the table. And it still could go many ways, even after the Summer League when Lamb was off the table.
Vucevic is about what you'd expect from a mid round pick. Probably a top 10 rookie last year. Harkless is a mid round pick. Afflalo is ok, a solid player on a decent but not great contract.
Raptors pick could be early teens, they clearly weren't looking to tank.

so basically two early teens picks + late Dallas pick + cap relief vs. two mid round prospects + 4 late picks + Afflalo

it's not close.

Why does the Magic need to cut salary anyway? Are they going to sign free agents next year? They are rebuilding. They need assets. They need prospects. Houston offered less of those.

 

Basically we are discussing over low ball offers still being better than what Orlando got. Good for me. That means we have all of that rebuilding package Orlando was asking for so that the Rockets themselves can rebuild with. Either way Rockets came out on top keeping or giving it away. There was no way to lose if they didnt get Howard because Howard was extremely likely to leave anyways.

 

Adding several overpaid veteran large contracts while at the same time losing several promising youngsters with high upside would be losing something in the context of the rebuilding process.

 

Nash told the Suns that he was willing to be traded to the Lakers to remain close to his family. Howard told the Magic he wanted to be a Laker. That's why they're in Los Angeles today. If Howard wanted to be in Houston, then Howard would be in Houston.

Good deal after good deal was getting passed up, and each successive deal was getting worse. In the end Hennigan/Martins hit the panic button, realizing they were catching a falling knife.

They achieved none of the combo of good young prospects, lottery picks, or salary cap relief. Not one.

 

You forgot a pick. ORL's source said TOR, DAL and a 3rd if needed. Plus, Lamb and Martin.

You conveniently left a 3rd future 1st and Martin out of your explanation.

Why didn't you accurately state what is clearly in the article?

Also, you are forgetting one big thing...the ORL sources have a vested interest making this look good. So I believe that is the LOWEST it could have been.

 

two first rounders are enough for Bynum.

Everyone is talking about three people after the trade. Or rather three things. Bynum, Howard, Iguodala. If you are the trading away Howard? You should be one of those things being discussed or at least in the top 3. So I really do not care how Orlando words it to save face. Its their problem now. It does not involve the Rockets who lost nothing in this offseason.
