Some idiot has gotten control over a small plane at gunpoint and is now flying over Frankfurt and threatening to crash into a tall building or the airport. All flights have been canceled and people have been evacuated from tall buildings. Also, the main train station has been evacuated. The moron claims he wants to remind people of the "Challenger" disaster. I hope they shoot him down when he is over a field.
Pilot threatens crash into ECB HQ Sunday, January 5, 2003 Posted: 10:50 AM EST (1550 GMT) The pilot of the Cessna buzzed the Eurotower building, home of the European Central Bank. FRANKFURT, Germany (CNN) -- The pilot of a small plane was threatening to crash into the European Central Bank building in Frankfurt on Sunday unless he can speak to a U.S. citizen named Charles Resnick, police said. The city's airport, one of Europe's busiest, was closed as the stolen single-engined Cessna aircraft circled the city's downtown, authorities said. Police said the plane was hijacked at 3:52 p.m. local time (1452 GMT) in Babenhausen, 13 miles southeast of Frankfurt. They added that a helicopter was pursuing the aircraft and trying to force it away from the city. CNN's Chris Burns said that the plane was flying low between the city's skyscrapers. The plane took a dive towards the city skyline but veered away at the last moment, Burns said. Thousands of locals had turned out to watch the drama, he said. Police have been ordering people away from some bridges. Burns said it was not known if the pilot was armed. Several skyscrapers in the country's financial capital were evacuated as a precaution, and streets were cleared. http://www.cnn.com/2003/WORLD/europe/01/05/germany.cessna/index.html
It almost looks like a powered glider, quite small. It probably won’t do a huge amount of damage if he does hit anything. I wouldn’t want to be standing near a window that it hit, mind you. Maybe they’ll just follow it until it runs out of gas.
Somewhat reminiscent of that incident in Italy. I hope this doesn’t become a recurring copycat kind of event.
This sounds like a crazy shenanigan that Jack Bauer would pull (The part about needing to talk to a guy named Resnick and possibly circling the building to give the authorities time to evacuate the entire area so no one gets hurt in case he does something stupid.) 10:32:01 10:32:02 10:32:03
I think they were not sure if he was alone or if the original pilot was on the plane and flying it, threatened at gunpoint. Actually, I still don't know which one is true.
Maybe you lived in Frankfurt/Oder. That is in East Germany. I am fairly sure that the airport officers did not carry those in Frankfurt/Main in 1989.
