My family has decided that we want to go to see NY for New Years Eve. We live in CHicago so it should be around 850 miles for us since we're driving. We're planning on leavin Sunday morning(Dec. 29) and reaching either Monday evening or MOnday night. Anyone have any suggestions to alter these plans, add on to these plans, or have any good tips for NY? Any good stores to go to? Any good parking places?Any cheap hotels?

    LOL

any parking place is a good parking place.

well unless it is close to times square. see after midnight massive crowds walk and run and frollick away from times square and even (as i have seen) walk over parked cars.

your a tourist, so go to all the tourist places. NY is big enough that if you try and do something besides being a tourist on your first time there I think you will be overwelmed. and yes I know your from chicago, but I stick by my guns. Just do the Broadway times square trendy resturant thing with a museaum or two. Everything depends on where you are staying, but i have no suggestions there.

I do however suggest that you know what you are getting into if you walk to times square.

Its a dirty drunken crowded place. And to be vague I will add that there are not enough bathrooms

    have fun in the city

TimesSquare will have mostly other tourists and will be extremely crowded and difficult to access. If you want a backup plan I'd suggest hanging out in the West Village or SoHo on NewYears eve. Regarding hotels, if you intend on staying in Manhattan I would imagine that most of the rooms are already booked solid. Your best bet would be to try hotels further downtown. Regarding stores, what exactly would like you like to shop for?

The problem with Times Square is that, in order to watch the ball drop, you have to get there REALLY early in the day and stake out a spot. Also, due to 9/11, once it gets late, the police barricade the area off and don't let anyone IN or OUT. Meaning, if you have to pee, you're in trouble. You may be able to persuade the cops to let you out, but you might have trouble a) getting back in and b) finding your friends. Personally, I think it's a hassle. Take it from a current New Yorker: I've never been to Times Square during New Year's... and I never will. Oh, did I mention the part about standing outside in bitter cold?

Here's another NYC New Year's problem: just about EVERYWHERE you go to eat on New Year's will have a special truncated menu and jacked up prices. To give you a good idea of this, the freaking Olive Garden in Times Square is charging $150 per person! Last year, my fiancee and I, after searching near and far for a place to eat, decided to cook a romantic meal instead.

As far as alternates, pretty much anywhere you go will be the same. Just pick a place, really. Pippendagimp suggested the West Village, and I agree. It can pretty rowdy there, so it might be fun.

What about me, you ask? I'll be in Disneyworld. That's right. I'm getting the hell away from NYC for New Year's... :)

Try the NBA store, been there really cool stuff. And a very big place. Bought a few things. Also may want to check out the ESPN Zone pretty good food and arcade games. Mickey Mantles is also a pretty nice restuaraunt and some interesting stuff if your a sports fan.

My flight to NYC leaves Saturday morning from Hobby. Apparently its cold as ****e over there right now. I'm staying with my brother in Queens for one week. I'll probably go to the Met since last time I saw the Guggenheim.

Rockets R Us- Too bad they don't give free tours of the NYSE like they used to, I'd like to do it again. Maybe ya'll can go shopping in Soho and check out some pubs in Greenwich Village. Don't forget to look around in Times Square and tell Carson Daly to f himself during TRL.

Vecsey, it sounds to me that it's much more fun to be outdoors than out in the bitter cold with thousands of other douchebags just to watch the ball drop at midnight. Enjoy Mickey Mouse.

Pippendagimp, West Village should be pretty damn nice on New Year's Eve. I'll probably wear something nice like a dress shirt, v-neck sweater, slacks, and leather car coat.

VOR, what are the hot spots for New Year's in NYC. Remember, I haven't received my signing bonus yet, so I don't want to pay some $100 cover charge.

Stay across the river in Jersey...its cheaper, safer, there's more parking(not to mention that most hotels tack on about 40 bucks to your room bill for parking), and its a 5 minute subway ride to times square.

If you must stay in Manhattan, stay downtown (I think Gimp suggested the Village).

Other than that, you are pretty much in the same boat as everyone else...for the most part, no one from this area will go within 10 feet of Times Square on New Yrs eve

    have fun and good luck!!!

amen, brother, I am kicking it in H-TOwn. itslike when people who live in New Orleans leave for a week during Mardi Gras.

About the TImes Square party, VesceySux is right.

the police have come up with a system where they basically corral people like cattle in a grid system. once you are in, you can't get out. once the area fills up, no one can get in.

have a blast and don't forgoet to give us the update.

I actually usually get upstate for some snowboarding.

Saratoga is a fun town for new Years, but Times square is pretty much for 18 year olds. you go once and thats enough
