http://espn.go.com/ncf/bowls02/s/rose_playstation.html PASADENA, Calif. -- Sony Playstation has replaced AT&T as the sponsor of the Rose Bowl. Monday's announcement came nearly eight months after AT&T said it would not be renewing its contract, leaving the nation's oldest bowl without a major corporate backer. Washington State will play Oklahoma at the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day. The sponsors for the other major bowls are: Fiesta Bowl, Tostitos; Orange Bowl, Federal Express; and Sugar Bowl, Nokia. ABC Sports owns the right to choose the Rose Bowl sponsors. The Tournament of Roses Association, which stages the game in Pasadena, does not participate in sponsor negotiations but does have a final say in the sponsorship. Under the deal signed in 1998, ABC paid $19 million each year to the Tournament of Roses to broadcast the 1999, 2000 and 2001 Rose Bowls and $20.5 million to broadcast the 2002 game.
I didn't feel like starting a new thread when I heard this the other night on 1310 The Ticket up here, but this is as good a place as any to bring it up. The hosts were going over the BCS selections, and when they got to the Rose Bowl, they ignorantly and inaccurately stated that the Rose Bowl was the only bowl remaining that hasn't sold it's soul to the devil that is bowl corporate sponsorship, and ranted about that for a few minutes. I **** you not, after they went through the bowls, the same host said, "This BCS Bowl segment is brought to you by..." (I can't remember the company) Hypocrite.
Apparently the Silicon Valley and Seattle Bowls still don't have sponsors. Who is going to give their payouts? There are way too many bowl games that rewards teams for 6-6 and 7-5 seasons. Just look at the fact that 8 out of 12 of the Big 12 teams are bowl bound this year. A&M would have gone too, but they turned the Humanitarian Bowl down.
Just look at the fact that 8 out of 12 of the Big 12 teams are bowl bound this year. And those are 8 deserving teams......who would you count out, besides MAYBE Iowa State?
So future bowl game winners get a PS2 bundle package and losers get... the old Playstation with only 1 controller?
Those bowl games are garbage. Come on I could do without some of these: Humanitarian Bowl Seattle Bowl New Orleans Bowl Houston Bowl Tangerine Bowl GMAC Bowl Continental Tire Bowl Diamond Walnut San Francisco Bowls These games are basically overhyped non-conference games. Keep the bowls that have tradition. It used to be that going to a bowl game was a big deal. Now nobody gives a damn.
They are a big deal to the schools and every player who gets to go. As long as they're corporate sponsors out there willing to put up the money for them, who cares if there are a lot of bowl games and many teams get an extra game? I don't see how this is a bad thing.
118 D1 schools. 56 bowl teams. What is the % of NFL teams that go to postseason play? 25% What is the % of college teams that go to bowls? 47% Seems to me that we could lose 6 or 7 bowls safely. Going to the postseason should be a big deal. Although...as soon as D1 has a playoff system that allows the conference winner of EVERY (even the weakest) conference to enjoy a postseason berth...then I think some of the bowls will evaporate. Until then...allow these kids to enjoy their moment in the spotlight.
