Awesomeness! But it absolutely must have a nuclear power facility. Must.

Newt Gingrich is promising to establish a permanent base on the moon by 2020 if he's elected president.

Gingrich, the former House speaker, told an overflow crowd gathered on Florida's space coast Wednesday that he wants to develop a robust commercial space industry in line with the airline boom of the 1930s. He also wants to expand exploration of Mars.

The pronouncements appeared to thrill the crowd of roughly 700 people. Florida's space coast is still suffering from a recent round of federal cuts to the space program.

But how would Gingrich pay for it?

The Republican presidential contender says he wants to offer prizes to help stimulate investment by the private sector.

I guess Newt could play the Barry Morse character well enough.

I'd rather have a President that wants to do innovative stuff like that than somebody who goes bah-humbug and craps all over our government run STEM organizations.

If you want to do innovative stuff, invest your own money, or find some investors who will give you money. I hear Richard Branson is doing some "innovative stuff".

I always wonder what kind of sick mindset one must have to take pleasure in spending the confiscated wealth of others.

That's fine too. But there's nothing wrong with public efforts as well. There are certain things that cannot be achieved by the private sector. Just look at how much sci/tech spearheaded by governments around the world have advanced our civilization over just the last 100 years.

By 2020? Has he checked our space program lately? Can I have some of whatever illegal substance he's imbibing? There isn't a bigger supporter of our space program in general, and manned space flight in particular, than I am, but this is as likely as me digging up a lost Spanish treasure in my Southwest Austin backyard.

(although I thought I saw DD diggin' back there the other night. Coulda been an armadillo)

Maybe he thinks a bounce house is air tight and good to go in the vacuum of space?

I thought Hightop was a Ron Paul supporter?

On that tangent what is Ron Paul's position on NASA?

    http://voices.yahoo.com/article/926...s-abolishing-nasa-renegotiating-10746157.html

That we should abolish NASA, move the defense functions to the military, and set up a land office to offer homesteading on the moon. At least that's what it was in 1988 when he ran for President as a Libertarian.

Homesteading on the Moon? How would that work with the Outerspace Treaty that declares the Moon the territory of all humanity?

Anyway for anyone against Obama because of cutting NASA it seems ironic to support Ron Paul who would abolish it. For those of you that live in Ron Paul's district does that ever come up as an issue for voters since isn't Johnson Space Center in his district?
