Chad Ford's Mock Draft #1

Plus we'd have the NY 2012 1st rounder. Though realistically, we'd probably be more likely in the 5-10 range.. probably closer to 10 than 5. I don't trust this group of all-effort, scrappers to completely tank.

 

I still think it's too much of a gamble to give up Martin for a draft pick that may or may not pan out in the future. We already have one of the top scorers in the league. Why give him up now when he is only 27-28? Trade Scola and Lee instead and use whatever picks we have left to replace them.

 

When will they do the lottery? I thought it was supposed to be done during the 2nd round of the playoffs.

Hmm, let's draft a SF with bad shot selection and poor effort on defense so we can pair him with that other SF with bad shot selection and poor effort on defense that we traded a 1st round pick for this season.

Look, as a Longhorns fan I'm pretty much obligated to like Jordan Hamilton, but I'd rather not have to go through watching him make horrible decisions that lose games for my favorite team anymore.

 

I actually agree with Ford regarding the thinking, maybe not the pick. My thought is that we'll probably draft an athletic high-defense wing because those are easier to obtain in the middle of the first round of a draft rather than a legitimate big man, most of whom are usually gone by the first seven picks (see Cousins and Monroe last year) if they have any upside whatsoever. So to me the options for that include Singleton, Leonard, and Hamilton. None of us have any idea how the Rockets rate these players though. I wouldn't be surprised to see Singleton go at 14 rather than 23.

 

This draft looks extremely weak and reminds me of the 2000 draft where guys like Marcus Fizer, Chris Mihm, and Dermarr Johnson were top 10 picks

 

I could live with those two picks......its what we need and in a weak draft not too bad of picks talent wise....

 

I agree that Martin is way too valuable to give up in a draft like this with no clear cut franchise players available. There will be some nice players here, but I will be shocked if this draft produces anything of equal or greater value than one of the most efficient NBA scorers to ever play the game.

Whether you think Martin is a superstar or not, what he does on the court is proven. You dont give that up for a Enes Kanter or Kyrie Irving. Those are real nice players and will be effective immediately, but I dont see that kind of value in the top 10 this year.

Now Scola, as valuable as he is to alot of teams, is sort of the odd-man out on the current roster and fit going forward. With his current knee injury sending red flags it might be more difficult to move him, but there might still be some takers out there.

 

I agree. He's only 18 and as Ford mentions, can be stashed overseas to season. We aren't going to get that much real help this year with that pick anyway.

 

Agree but I don't think that he'll be there. Ford always seems to underestimate teams desire for size. Especially with the success of Marc Gasol and Ibaka.

You make me want to bang my head against the wall. You wouldn't give up Martin for Irving, the #1 pick in the draft? Did you go to school with DD, who didn't want to give up Budinger for unproven DeMarcus Cousins?

There is no debate on Martin being a superstar. He's not.

 

I don't see us using a draft pick for a specialist. We are looking for upgrades in the form of 2-way players. Morey is trying to figure out how to combine our draft picks nad current players in a package for a 2-way player that brings both offense and defense. So, in my mind, guys like Hamilton and Singleton aren't a fit. We've got a 1-way scorer in Martin. All Jordan Hamilton would do is take away shots from Martin and water down our offensive efficiency. He'd replace Budinger with the same thing except take more shots. We've got perimeter defenders in guys like Lowry, Lee, Dragic, TWilliams. Just drafting another perimeter defender that can't score won't help us. It will take away minutes from a guy like Lee who really is a 2-way guy or the rookie sits and doesn't develop and loses value. Therefore, I don't see guys like Singleton as a fit either.

We need a two-way upgrade, either at the 3 or at the 5. If we can't get that by drafting or trading, then I suspect we will get the best player on the board or trade down or out of the draft. The best player on the board at our pick may be another point guard or SG. But that's the way Morey rolls.

 

Trade Martin and this years picks in order to move up in the draft and capitalize and a strong draft next year. How much better would this team be with Enis Kanter or Biyombo in this years draft plus a Harrison Barnes or Perry Jones in next years draft plus what ever we get with NY's pick

 

I don't want Irving. I want a center and I would take one of the three available in this years draft. I'm tired of watching Chuck play center. Irving may become a superstar but it is just so damn hard to draft a center and I don't see one in next years draft.

 

Martin may not be a superstarrolleyes, but he is one of the most efficient scorers in the league. It would not be wise to give him up for an unproven Irving. Not saying that Morey won't do it though. It would be better to choose a center up that far in the draft. Still, not for the bulk of our scoring. I guess it all depends on whether Morey wants to actually win now or not, doesn't it?

 

You have to take Irving. As hard as centers are to find, franchise players are even more rare. Irving has the chance to be something special; you don't pass on that to draft a Samuel Dalembert. The Timberwolves really needed a SF, so they passed on DeMarcus Cousins to take Wesley Johnson. You just can't draft based on need when you're picking that high -- you take the best player: Irving.

Moot point -- Irving won't be traded.

cbl-- Martin's a good scorer who doesn't play defense and shrinks in the clutch. Please don't go down the "unproven" path again.. especially not with Irving. I still have headaches from trying to convince people last year we should trade for Cousins, only for them to tell me Budinger is proven and Cousins is an unknown.

edit: I feel like in every post I'm bashing Martin in a way. He's a good player, I like him. But if you can trade him for a franchise player, it's a no brainer. Irving is that type of player.
