    I think it was something on the ground, that the tires threw up.

    I remember some lady in Houston was killed on a service road sitting at the red light while a semi on the highway above ran over a piece of metal that caused it to fly like a boomerang. It went through the driver side window hitting her in the head. Debris on the roads....

    EDIT: If this is it, I got my story mixed up. This lady was decapitated.

    some 18 wheeler flung a 5 foot metal pole and it hit my passenger side. it landed parallel to the windshield so it was just a huge spiderweb crack. this video gives me nam-like flashbacks.
