Has anybody ever ordered any food from this service? My girlfriend wants me to order something because it is for a good cause but I am skeptical about the quality of food I would be getting in return for such a low price. Anybody have any experience?
I have. It's a good bargain. The meat is low-quality, but edible (lots of sodium), except the turkey we got was better than the high-dollar turkey we got for thanksgiving last year. I guess, if you shop at Wal-Mart, it's a good deal for food you're used to. If you shop at Whole Foods, the food might be disgusting to you. We buy most of our dry goods at Wal-Mart, but all of our bakery/produce/meat at Albertsons.
What does your girlfriend mean that it is for a good cause? These folks don't make money on the food they sell.
Not sure. I think she may think that because the distribution is done mostly through churches thereby associating it with a good cause.
Essentially, the folks that buy the food from Angel Food Ministries are the ones receiving the benefit. They have no income limits as to who can receive the food, but they suggest that if you order something from them, you take the savings and donate it to a charitable cause. In essence, if you buy their $31 box of food and it would tend to cost $75 retail, you should take the $44 savings and give it away.
I consider something is for a good cause when my money goes directly to benefit that cause. In other words, if I walk down to Angel Food Ministries, hand them a check for $100 and walk away, I am directly impacting their ministry. If I walk down there, hand them $31 and take away a box of food, I am not positively impacting their ministry at all.
Look at it like this- the more people who buy, the better buying power they have, and they can pass the savings on to people who really need the savings. (although I questioned the ample desert stuff - If you're destitute, the last think you should be buying is luxury items like cake)
I think my buddy ordered food from this group a few years ago. I don't know if there are a bunch of different organizations that do this, but we cooked some of the ribs he got on the 4th of July. It was easily the worst quality of ribs I've ever had in my life, including the McRib.
