Waking Life

    Just got back from RIchard Linklater's latest journey, Waking Life, a story about a boy who is trapped in a constant dream state.

    The film, shot on video then drawn over and animated, is a visual
    masterpiece, sure to pick up some awards for its innovative approach to cinema. YOu see an animated version of EThan Hawke, or Wiley Wiggins(the kid from Dazed & Confused, the lead in Waking Life), or other members of Linklater's crew(Many of his Dazed and Confused actors return for this one).

    Not to mention that part of the story(or dream, or however you look at it)takes place in Austin. Anyone remember Alex Jones, the political radio and TV personality from Austin who rants and raves over the government and civil liberties? He has a great sequence driving around Austin with a PA system attached to his car, him doing his whole manifesto that I remember well from living in Austin. Also, an old screenwriting professor of mine, Kim Krizan(cowriter of Before Sunrise with Linklater), gives a theory in communication and language that I can recall from her class at Austin Community College.

    THIS FILM BLEW ME AWAY. Random events, conversations, philosophies, theories, ideas are explored throughout the film, all relating to dreaming vs. reality, alive vs. dead, GOd vs. Science.

    I cannot stress how important this was to me as a filmmaker, as an artist, as a Texan/New Yorker, as a young human with these thoughts being explored in such a new and fascinating medium.

    I am glad Linklater took the time to do something from his heart instead of that Newton Boys Crap. I am also interested in his other feature currently released, "Tape", starring Hawke and Uma Thurman.

    As you can see I am truly inspired right now, so go see WAKING LIFE

    I just finally got around to seeing this last night and I haven't enjoyed a film this much in a long time.

    Felt like a really good, thought provoking conversation more than a movie.

    This is in my top 3 favorite movies ever. I quote it nonstop.

    I love the scene with the guy lighting himself on fire. He says some powerful stuff.

    I love anything Linklater honestly. Just watched Scanner Darkly again last week.

    I fell asleep in the middle.

    While interesting, it seemed like 4 or 5 different drug conversations sans the drugs.

    If you like the discussions in Waking Life, check out Ghost in the Shell 2.

    as you could see I was truly inspired.

    what a interesting little time capsule. i remember that experience and who I was with and everything.

    I watched Waking Life again last night. I mean I've seen it like 3 or 4 times but wow, it's just so great every time.

    I really forget how trippy and visually stunning this film is. If you're even remotely interested in philosophy, science, religion, or dream psychology/lucid dreaming, you'll find it fascinating. Just wanted to bump this thread in case anyone hasn't seen it, to keep it in mind next time you're looking for a good movie.

    Linklater is one of my favorite directors, hands down.
