I'm getting conflicting stories browsing around for infomations so I figured I'll ask here:

I have an Upgrade Windows 7 Professional CD plus key (for upgrade only)

from school, and currently my PC is running Vista Home Premium

can I do an upgrade with this CD + key?

I just dont wanna get stuck at the installation process if I can't because I dont have my Vista CD. (Computer was bought open box at Sam's Club awhile back).

Some people are saying you can if is Wins 7 is higher than the previous Windows edition ..... Professional > Home Premium

Some are saying you need to do a complete installation.

While others are saying it has to be the corresponding editions to work
    7 Pro = Vista Pro

Any suggestion? Is either I can do the upgrade with this key or stuck at Vista

I think you can upgrade only if they match up, otherwise you have to do a reinstall, but I really don't know for sure... that is just what I did the couple of times I have handled 7 upgrades.

It should work as long as the cd key hasn't already been used.

With Windows Vista running at desktop, put in the Windows 7 cd, go to upgrade and enter key when prompted. If the key works, your OS will be upgraded, if not your OS will remain the same.

    Hope this helps.

you can do it if they are both 32 or 64 bit.

Why not just do a clean install? The performance will be better.
