Which other sports team do you think the Rockets compare to the most?

    Sometimes, you'll hear people compare teams across sports, in relation to their achievement, quality of players, or style of play.


    New York Yankees = Los Angeles Lakers (Perennial contender for title, large market, almost always win their division. Both lead by coaches who are kind of hands off and are not necessarily the best at Xs and Os - Torre and Phil Jackson, though both are absolutely outstanding at managing star players and etc.)


    Indianapolis Colts = Atlanta Braves (90s - early 2000s)    ; (Makes the playoffs, every single year with usually dominant regular season records, headed by great pitchers/QB, but often fails in the post season. Braves only 1 Title-14 postseasons/5 World Series Appearances ; (Manning's) Colts only 1 Title-10 postseasons/2 Super Bowl Apperances)

    Boston teams (Red Sox-Patriots-Celtics): All premier teams at one time in this decade, but lately all three have been in somewhat of downward spiral. Though, usually a fixture for the playoffs.


    New England Patriots (pre 07/Moss/Welker) = San Antonio Spurs    : (Most Super Bowl, NBA Title wins between 01-07, both are very well balanced on both sides of ball, have often beaten teams with more talent; Two coaches who are absolutely outstanding at getting the most out of marginal players and rarely seen falling asleep while coaching. Tend to draft high character players, while sometimes making a pitch a players who are either somewhat troubled or ones who are past their prime. Both are lead by well-adjusted future hall of fame players who are relatively quiet, but have knack for winning big games - Tom Brady and Tim Duncan). While, both teams are not really known for glamorous offense, or a particularly dominant defense. Before particular periods, both teams had their bright days (Patriots-Parcells years and Grogan period/Spurs-David Robinson era and George Gervin era) and their dark days (The Patriots early 70s and late 80s-early 90s/ Spurs, pre Robinson era).


    Detroit Pistons (00s) = Baltimore Ravens (00s)    : Stingy, suffocating defenses. Known for shutting down great offensive teams, while at times having difficulty scoring. Both teams are fairly good to great in the regular season, but often met their matches against better teams or a team who wanted more. Still, both teams have managed to win at least won championship with couple conference championship appearances.

    Tampa Bay Devil Rays = Charlotte Bobcats: Not a very glamorous team

    Detroit Lions = Los Angeles Clippers    : Historical laughing stock.


    Phoenix Suns (with Nash) = New Orleans Saints (with Brees)    : Strictly offensive teams (lead by great offensive players, who have perfected the art of passing), though that changed after the Saints finally broke through this season and won the Super Bowl. Though, you can often see the comparisons between the two in the way that their offense is executed. High-flying circus offense, with very little smash-mouth (though Saints changed that little bit) ball.

    Dallas Cowboys = Dallas Mavericks: One (obsessed/meddling/douchebaggy) owner who has never won a championship vs. another (obsessed/meddling/evil) owner who not won a Super Bowl, since the 95 (96) season. Oh, yeah both teams have lovely fans. :rolleyes:


    Houston Rockets =

    Personal opinion (you can come up with your own suggestions).

    1. San Diego Chargers (Hyped up in preseason, hyped down after first couple months with a very average record, then has big winning streak in the middle of season, key injuries, good defensive team, and fades out in the playoffs).

    2. San Francisco Giants-Barry Bonds version (Controversial star player-who is often unstoppable at times, who has not had alot of success in the playoffs until 2002 with a 2nd wheel who is pretty good (Ming-Kent), though without any other all-star caliber players . . .with fairly good defense)

    3. Houston Astros = :rolleyes:, usually getting big name players through trades or when they are quickly passing their prime. Injury prone superstars players (Berkman = Yao), who usually can make or break a team.

    Dallas Cowboys are more like the Lakers. They brand themselves as the major team of the league. They have the ability to have player in the league believe the hype therefore teams sign with the team because they feel they can get a ring. They both have bandwagon fans across the country that loves them because they are told by ESPN that they should. As a fan either you will love them or hate them.

    Tampa Bay does not equal the Bobcats, the Rays are the most talented team in MLB just REALLY young and they reached the series in 08.

    The Rockets would be most like the LA Angels, they have great ownership, excellent GM and outstanding fans. When they finally get the right pieces together they will break through past the Yanks/Lakers.

    Cowboys are like the Yankees not the Lakers. They even have a business collaboration with their stadiums to solidify that relationship

    Houston Rockets is like Butler. Brad Stevens uses sabremetrics and stats progressively like Morey does (he even knew minutes after the game that they had 147 possessions in that game). They play team ball with one star and multiple role players.

    They even have their own "Shane Battier" Willie Veasley who's actually called "our Shane Battier" by the team and by Stevens.

    I follow an Australian Rules Football team called the Adelaide Crows. I started following the Rockets a few years back unknowing of the comparisons between my two favorite sporting teams.

    - Both won back to back championships in the 90s, which are their only wins
    - Both have great coaches, but aren't the best game day coaches (slow making moves etc)
    - Both have probably the best front offices/recruiting departments in their respective leagues
    - Both have to have the best front offices/recruiting departments in their leagues because they usually make the playoffs but don't go that far, hence get average picks
    - Both refuse to tank and don't need to bottom out to rebuild
    - Both make by far the most of their average picks and thus have assembled teams comprising of non top 15 picks which are competitive with the best teams in the league
    - Both have awful luck with injury (amongst the worst in their respective leagues)...every year I think "if only x didn't get injured, we could have won"
    - Both had/will have difficult 2010s

    Rockets = Aggies

    We get excited every season, think that this year "will finally be our year", then we end up losing on a bad call/bad turn of luck (Sloan getting fouled vs. UCLA, Finley 2 feet out of bounds, can't get a rebound at the end of Utah series) etc...

    Both teams never seen to catch a break.

    Injuries (Yao, Tmac, D-Roland for the ags with a tragic complex break in his lower leg)

    Add in the Texans and Aggie football, and yeah, my life sucks as a sports fan :(

    Rockets have a roster full of great talent. We could of done alot better.

    Other than following NBA, I also follow English football (Soccer in American terms).

    I am a die-hard Arsenal fan, and what I can compare Arsenal and the Rockets is their luck in injuries. Major injuries season after season that prevents them from achieving their potential.

    I hope next year both of these teams can be healthy and win the championship!

    Probably the Oakland Athletics. A storied franchise with a well-known stat-savvy general manager (Billy Beane) whose exploits using unconventional, against the grain drafting and analysis became well-known across MLB.

    Some championships in the not-too-distant past, and plenty of playoff appearances recently, but fallen on a little harder times the past couple seasons as they try to rebuild on the fly.

    They're worse than struggling right now. They're awful.

    Actually, that's another comparison. Both teams weren't given that much of a chance last year but pushed hard towards the end of the season and probably overachieved a little given their injuries and inexperience, promising big things for the following season. Adelaide have been awful to start this year given the promise they showed last year, lets hope the Rockets don't continue this trend next year.
