    I think it's innocent enough for that time period: particularly for a game-show host from that era, trying to show charisma and get humor out of guests who are more shy and less coherent/interactive than adults. I think in the late '70s and early '80s when Adam Walsh-type stuff got more attention, everyone was understandably more protective and mindful of our behavior around children.
