NEWARK, N.J. (AP) _ The New Jersey Nets found a backup for All-NBA point guard Jason Kidd on Thursday by signing former New York Knick Chris Childs. The free agent spent the past season with Toronto, averaging 4.1 points and 5.1 assists in 69 games for the Raptors. ``We are very pleased to add Chris to our roster,'' said Nets president-general manager Rod Thorn. ``He is a proven NBA veteran with valuable playoff experience who will add depth to our point guard position.'' Childs began his NBA career with the Nets in 1994-95 and played two seasons with the team, before spending four years with New York. He was traded to Toronto on Feb. 22, 2001. The 6-foot-3 Childs, who attended Boise State, has career averages of 7 points and 4.9 assists over 529 games. What a great move by NJ, with this move NJ might get past the Lakers if they meet again in the Finals. It's the dog days of summer
