I remember an NFL play (probably sometime within the past decade, and I think the Lions were involved) where a team was punting and the punt returner didn't catch the ball, just allowed it to bounce in the endzone. Somehow, the ball bounced strangely and just went straight up into the air and settled to ground. The returner never turned to walk away from the football, but the punting team started to walk off the field. The returner picked up on this, grabbed the ball in the endzone and headed back the other direction. Both teams were reluctant to acknowledge anything was happening, but the referees never blew their whistle so the returner continued on to score a touchdown. Of course the punting team argued the play was over and after an official's conference, they awarded the returner with the touchdown. Really a strange sequence, but it goes to show to never give up on a play.

I tried finding this on youtube, but for the life of me, I can't remember the two teams or the returner's name. ???
