Wow. 45 spam posts and not banned yet.

I rarely look at the stars, but saw this a couple nights ago. Assumed it was venus because I saw it blink a couple times. The reason I found it odd was that no other star was visible, yet this one was clear as a bell. When I saw it, it was to the upper right, in the 10 PM position.

    Very odd.

I wish I could have seen this -- was it low in the sky... sounds like atmospheric lensing of Venus.

    From:

August 2009: 5-6 Brilliant Jupiter stands to the lower left of the Moon as they rise not long after nightfall on the 5th, and closer to its right or upper right on the 6th. Faint Neptune is nearby.

Strange that Jupiter would be so bright, but apparently that is what it was...

I would vote Jupiter. We are fast approaching our closest distance to Jupiter in the two planets' orbits, and it is opposite the sun for us, so it would be really visible these days. If you have even a small telescope, you should be able to make out some bands and color on Jupiter.

By the way, this is the International Year of Astronomy. (Woop!)

^ Yeah, i'm going to have to bust the scope out tonight and have a look -- hopefully the weather will cooperate, but i'm afraid that the 6th was the best/ last night to see Jupiter.

    KingCheetah,
Please admit which planet you will dress as to celebrate the IYA. (And yes, MadMax, it is eerie to see how close IYA is to MAYAN.)
