I like to consider myself old-school when it comes to my hard rock and heavy metal music. I love bands/artists like the Cult, Danzig, Faith No More, Motorhead, Pantera, AC/DC, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Judas Priest, etc. I do have one CD by the Deftones, "White Pony". I listened to it for only the second time last night. I sat there and thought to myself, "This isn't really that bad. It's no 'Ace of Spades' or 'Back in Black', but it is okay." Then I got to thinking...how many people who like old school hard rock/heavy metal (TheFreak, Jeff, Raven Lunatic, RocketsPimp, etc.) like "nu-metal bands?" Other than the Deftones, about the only other "nu-metal" band I like is Tool. However, I don't think you can lump them in with this genre of nu-metal. I do know one thing...I'll pass on buying hard rock/heavy metal CDs that have to have rap in it like System of a Down and Slipknot. So, I guess my question is this: what nu-metal bands (other than the Deftones) seem to be worth checking out (in your opinion)? Another question: is it just me or does the majority of this "nu-metal" suck?? Maybe it's the element of rap, but the quality to me seems to be lacking. Somehow, I don't have a lot of confidence in going out and buying Incubus, Staind, Godsmack, Puddle of Mudd, etc.
Wouldn't Faith No More be considered nu-metal? I'm not into to too much nu-metal, but Sevendust are pretty good.
Define "nu-metal" and I might be able to help.... I think there's probably a difference between "nu-metal" and NEW METAL. Tool is more art-rock...I think the term nu-metal is usually meant to disparage. Or maybe I just think bad things when I hear the word.
Oh yeah, and to post on topic. Yes, I definitely dig the old school metal. As far as this "Nu-metal" stuff, I generally do not go for it. I like some of Drowning Pool, and I absolutely love System of a Down. Tool is another if you consider them Nu-Metal. They have been around a while, though, to be considered a new metal band. They do have a unique sound. I don't really like Korn, Kidrock, Deftones, Puddle of Mud, Slipknot (just a few clowns short of a circus) or any of the other new metal bands that can't seem to find their own sound.
New Jack: Faith No More broke up several years ago and was doing albums in the late '80s. I think that you might feel they are "nu-metal" because they use some hip-hop/rap stuff in their songs, but they didn't go overboard with it, IMO. TheFreak: I don't know how to define "nu-metal" and "NEW metal"...that is why I'm asking; however, I would love to hear what you think is "NEW metal" i.e. your favorite rock bands that haven't been around long. Raven: Doesn't System of a Down have rap in almost every one of their songs? Who would you compare them to that is an old-school type band?
I'm not sure what you mean by "Nu-Metal"... Give me a better definition. As for "newer" hard-rock/metal bands, I can think of a few I do like. but I think they are a bit mainstream. Creed, Staind, Nickelback, 3 Doors Down and stuff like that is ok....its no Maiden or Priest but its not too bad. I heard a song the other day I thought was pretty cool...but when I actually heard the beginning of it yesterday, I was shocked to hear them rapping in the first verse...I'm not positive but I think they were called Lincoln Park..(at least thats what my oldest girl says anyway) Any thoughts on this one? Up the IRONS!!!
I've heard both of SOADs albums and I don't hear much rapping at all. They're actually very comparable to Faith No More, except they don't rap.
The only way that I can define "nu-metal" is to say it is bands that became "noticed" or started to become known in let's say the last 10 years. These bands are also known to have said that they have drawn on influences from old bands of hard rock and heavy metal. I wish I could come up with a better definition than that because the one I used is pretty generic, but that is the best that I can do.
yeah dude, i'm not the biggest Systom of a Down fan, but I've never heard rap in any of their songs. And, well, I'm not a Slipknot guy at all, but they dont really seem like rappers either.
ok Manny, thats good enuff. so basically ur talkin about HR/Metal bands that have come up between grunge and now... so I guess the ones I mentioned would apply. I also like some others that I don't know the names of. Unfortunately, I always seem to miss when they tell who it was on the radio.
I am most definitely old school when it comes to metal, but I do like some of the new stuff as well. Godsmack's first CD was really good. I haven't heard much of their latest release, but even though what I have heard doesn't sound as good as the first one, it doesn't sound bad either. System of a Down is arguably my favorite of the new school metal. I'm not sure what you've been listening to Manny, but I can assure you SOAD does not rap in their songs. I highly suggest you get Toxicity and go backwards through their library to delve deeper into their sound. Also, if you get a chance to see them live, do it. They freaking rock! If I were to compare them to another band I'd say Anthrax. Staind, IMO, are just a bunch of whiny punks like that chump Fred Durst who "discovered" them. Korn has been around for years, but some people consider them new school. IMO they have gotten drastically worse throughout the years. Their creativity has gone out the window. IMO their sound is worn out. If you want to try something kind of Motorheadish, check out Clutch. They have an old school rock/metal kind of sound(except for the song Careful With That Mic which is kind of rappish). Another band I love is Marilyn Manson. The music is very creative and fresh and the lyrics are deep and intellectual. Close minded individuals need not apply.
Deftones are effing awesome. Around the Fur is unbelievable. I traded it for Creed a couple years ago, worst decision of my life. I just rebought it last month. There's one song, "Adriana" by a band called Headstrong thats really nice. Just ignore the stupid ass band name. If you listen to nu-metal with the mindset that you won't like it, then you won't. The nu-metal vets are really good. With that being said...fvck Staind, Creed, Hoobastank, fill in the ones i forgot here __________.
If its that gawd awful crap they play on 101X here in Austin every day, I think I would rather listen to REO Speedwagon and vomit blood. I think everyone knows how I feel about the "nu-metal", rap-metal, whatever the hell you want to call that garbage. Basically, it is all recylced Metallica riffs turned up a notch and dropped "D" tuning to make playing easier. There are however good bands out there who have creativity and legitimate talent: Tool, System of a Down, Marilyn Manson, older Korn, Deftones, and Filter come to mind.
Wait, Drewdog, whats wrong with drop D if it makes playing a song easier? Unless you're trying to impress people ala Steve Vai nobody's really gonna give a flying hoot if you drop D, A, whatever as long as its a good song. Hell Hendrix used to drop D I think. I know a lot of the country dudes do too. The Buzz sucks.
Let me assure you SOAD has no rap incorporated in their music. I don't know what gave you the idea but it is untrue. I also have listened to some of Slipknots stuff and they do not have a rap sound. Im not a fan of rap and rock becoming one either. I think would hang myself before I become a fan of Lincoln Park, Limp Bizkit or Kid Rock but I do make an exception for Korn. Which they do have an element of rap in their albums especially in Follow The Leader but they have a sound all their own which I like. But with Issues and Untouchables the music is much more heavier than past albums and the hip hop sound is much less existent. But Im not going to say nu-metal sucks because for the most part I don't have discriminating tastes in rock other than this pop rock stuff. I think other quality bands out there right now is Our Lady Peace, Tool, and Disturbed. But I think Im going to have to challenge you when you classify Sound Garden as hard rock and heavy metal. But I do enjoy some of the classic bands such as Metallica, Iron Maiden and ZZtop. Anyways good post.
I don't know. I thought Korn was the band that pretty much started it, and their first album was very influential believe it or not. You know how many bands have been spawned from Korn? Their albums have gotten steadily worse, but they're always good for a couple of good songs. Other than that, the last System of a Down album was about the only other "Nu-Metal" album I like. But if you were to pick the king of "Nu-Metal" it would have to be Korn...I would think. If you never liked them, then you probably wouldn't like the entire genre. As for mixing rap and rock, the only band in my opinion that's ever been able to do it any good is Rage. Hey Manny, you heard of At the Drive-In? I'm not sure if they can be called Metal, but they're loud and they kickass! I like Andrew WK also.
My definition of nu-metal is a hybrid of heavily distorted rhythm guitar with hip-hop influences. Sometimes the hip-hop influences manifest themselves in actual rapping by the vocalist or simply in the overall rhythm of the music (i.e. the beat). Basically, nu-metal sounds like James Hetfield of Metallica playing rhythm guitar over a James Brown beat played by Lars Ulrich (not much subtlety here). Some bands also incorporate abstract DJ-esque sound effects ala Terminator X from Public Enemy. Korn is generally considered to be the first nu-metal band. I'm not much a fan of nu-metal because it seems to combine the worst aspects of metal (dumb lyrics, leadfooted drumming, one-dimensional harmony) and rap/hip-hop (unmelodic vocals, rhythmic stagnancy, poor songwriting). Korn has some really cool abstract guitar sounds, but the singer's heavy metal regression therapy rants and the bass player's sound (an industrial turbine with rice thrown into it) just grate on me. How many versions of a dropped-D riff played through a maxed-out Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier over the same drum beat with a guy humorlessly screaming about his neuroses do we really need? It's been done - please do something different. BTW Ninja, there's nothing wrong with dropped-D (or any tuning) as long as it's used to come up with something original or unique. But when (for example) RATM write the same ****ing song over and over again (Led Zepellin II guitar riff with squeaky noise solos and Zach b****ing about the same capitalism that he's exploiting) in dropped-D, it's a copout.
Glad you're branching out a little Manny. Most of the stuff coming out today is just flat out crap, but there are some jewels to be found. There is a band called Cold thats pretty good. They have two albums that are worth having (One self titled and 13 ways to bleed onstage). Tool are gods. While I was a bit disapointed in the latest release (Lateralus) it's still pretty good. Aenima is great...Undertow is great.. but the album I think you'd like the most is Opiate. It's the most like the type of music you seem to like. While I agree that Staind have become a bunch of little biotchs, their album Dysfunction is kick ass. System of a Down is a band that kind of grows on you. They have a very unique style that you either love or you hate. Check out a song they have called Spiders though, it's pretty awesome. White Pony is by far the Deftones worst album IMO. Check out Around the Fur or better yet Adreniline. If you have a file sharing program check out 7 words or Bored to get a feel for it. A Perfect Circle is TOOL's lead singer Maynard James Keenan's side project. Some people describe them as TOOL lite, but I dig them. They may be a one album band though, as TOOL seems to be working a lot lately. There is a new band called earshot that I'm getting into. They have one big single out so far called Get Away and if the rest of their album is as good as this it should be good. Tell you what, go check out this site http://www.shoutweb.com Go to the artist channels link and you can check out all these bands and more. Hope this helps.
