heypartner, I hope you are right on this one.... I'm keeping my fingers crossed. However, I think the Chinese are aware that the windfall is more on the side of the NBA than on China. The NBA gets access to 100s of millions more fans, more marketing potential, and more TV revenues. The Houston Rockets alone stand to make TONS of money if they can draft Ming and have a successful run. I'm not sure how that will benefit the Chinese.

But, I do hope you are right.

For those of you afraid of the Chinese government, here’s an article glynch posted a while back that gives some pretty interesting insights into what the Chinese government is about and where they are going. For those of you believe that Britain and Europe are evil socialist entities, I guess this won’t help much.

Chill out. Les Alexander did not become a billionaire because he can't stand a little frustration during negotiations.

Just like the Rockets and the league gm's are a better judge of Yao's talent than almost anyone on the bbs, Les is a better negotiator than virtually anyone on this board.

Also Houston should not have an inferiority complex. A midsize Asian Market like Houston is probably the best place for Yao to play. Though he is mentally tough from so many years of being "the man", a slower pace would be better for him. I'm confident that since he is a loyal guy, he will stay loyal to Cuttino, Steve and the rest of his teammates when contract talks come up.

    Yao is coming to Houston.

    :)

Did you ever travel outside US? Just wondering.

BTW, your characterization of Chinese society is way off base, and 20 years in lag.

I just visited a Chinese basketball forum. The fans there are pretty mad at Shanghai sharks. One guy wrote about Li yaomin "Who do think you are? What makes you think you can determine Yao's fate? By your logic, I can determine if you are allowed to f*** your wife or not."

China has opened up quite a lot in the past 20 years. Ordinary people are actually quite free as long as they don't organize anti-government movements. However, there are still some officials believe they can control other people's lives. Li yaomin is one of them. For these officials, you just screw them when you get a chance. Wang is doing that. I am happy for him and won't call him a softy anymore. I believe he will do the same thing on the court next year and won't let anybody take advantage of him.

What Wang did may actually be beneficial to Ming. The Chinese basketball officials will be in hot water if Wang's case explodes. They will not dare to mess with Ming again. If the basketball officials makes the Chinese government lose face both domestically and internationally, they will lose their job. If they lose their jobs, what do they do? They can neither play basketball nor do tech labor. They may not even be able to f*** their wives if they don't bring bread to the table.

Youre wrong. China will make more than anyone else on the deal.

    1. If Yao is drafted #1, they get 1/2 his salary. I assume "salary" will also extend to endorsement contracts. We're talking global endorsements.

    2. If Yao is succesful, the next player coming out of China won't be compared to Shawn Bradely just because they are Chinese and play in the CBA. More scouts will come to China, prospect in China, and pay attention to other Chinese players, even those who aren't 7'6".

They will also get non-monetary benefits.

    3. Yao will learn basketball skills from the finest the world has to offer, NBA coaches and trainers. He will pass those skills on to teammates and coaches which wil improve China's basketball program. To the Chinese, sports are a symbol of pride and prestige. That's why getting the Oylmpics was a huge deal even though we may not care as much.

    4. It will also give China pride that their player can compete against the best the U.S. has to offer. Trust me, this is a big issue. China has a big chip on its shoulder dating back to the early 1900's when it was invaded by a buttload of Western countries trying to colonize it.

Do you realize that 1/2 of Yao's salary is probably the monetary equivalent of an entire factory of workers at a Nike Sweatshop in some small province.

OK, I'm floored by TechLabor's post. We have SideShow Bob injected great humor into the BBS from Germany, and now Techie boy telling us that American's are free to f*** their wives anytime that want, and that is why Ming wants to play in the NBA, and why Li Yaomin will be fired with nothing to do.

    LOL

gotta love that chinese BBS. I want MORE translations!!!

I want THIS bbs to support the Chinese Character Set!!

techlabor, good post. First we had "pingpong diplomacy". Now we have "basketball diplomacy".

techlabor, what is keeping the Chinese communists in power after the fall of the Russians and Eastern Europeans? What are the prospects for a sudden collapse of the system?

Thanks glynch. Your question is hard to answer and I may not even know the answer. Democracy has a lot to do with tradition, culture, standard of living, education, etc... It cannot be achieved overnight. I don't want a sudden collapse of the system because it will do more harm than good to the Chinese people. I want a gradual reform to democracy. However, I really want the current Chinese president Jiang to be rid of ASAP cause he likes to sing a song, read a poem, or comb his hair in front of international dignitaries. It is always a big embarrasment.:(
